William was a younger son of John Chauncy and Alice Boyse. His birth date is uncertain. He may have been born at Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire, where his father had property.[1][2][3]
He married someone with the last name Garland.[3] She probably had the first name Joan, as Joan Chauncy, widow, appears in the Subsidy Roll for Sawbridgeworth in 1545,[1][2] being liable for 14d.[4] They had the following children:
John, named in the wills of his uncle George Chauncy and his brother Henry[3]
If the Joan Chauncy, widow, in the 1545 Subsidy Roll was his wife, William died before 1545. His wife survived him: his son Henry's 1557 will refers to his mother as living, without naming her.[1][2][3]
Research Notes
Children
Douglas Richardson states that there were five children.[1][2] From evidence in wills,[3] there appear to have been six, as stated above.
