Biography

John Claypool may have been born on 25 September 1733, at Rockingham Virginia, or perhaps from Sussex County Delaware.

He apparently married Rachel Eleanor Scott of Lost River, Hardy County (later West Virginia) in 1756, and he appears to have remained a resident of Hardy County until his death there in 1823. At some time, perhaps after Rachel Claypool's death in 1785, he remarried to Nancy Unknown, who survived him and was named in his 1823 Will. [1]

During the Revolutionary War, he served in some capacity involved supplies, whereupon he was sometimes known as "Colonel". However, in 1781, he led a rebellion against the burden of taxation and conscription to support the United States forces. [2] On trial for his life, Claypool begged for forgiveness, citing his influential relatives:

“Nothing could induce me to trouble you but an absolut necessity, which you and all my countrymen are fully acquainted with, in regard to my unhappy affair, for which I stand charge d in acting so precipitately, in consequence of which I most sincerely lament. Your honor, by reading the enclosed, I doubt not will put the mo st favorable constructions on my address to you, in praying your sentiments on the occasion. I herewith send you a petition to approve or condemn. The death of that gentleman (Capt. Peter Hog) whose humanity induced him to do all he could for me, is most deplorable. But the deportment by which I have conducted myself the cheif part of my life, added to my conduct since my resignation to trial, will extort your lenity in saving my life. I hope an act agreeable to the laws of heaven and an attribute peculiar to the great Judge himself, who knows the acute conflicts I feel, the consequence of base and dishonorable actions, for which I again request your approbation to live. My trial is to be brought on the next month, and the indisposition I now labor under calls aloud for a suspension of trial a while I presume may probably be in your power. I pray your sentiments in writing, if agreeable to your pleasure. I am Sir with due respect, Your most obedient humble Servant, JOHN CLAYPOOL
The state eventually dropped its case.

It is not clear how the name "Scott" got attached to John Claypool, unless this is a mistake for his son. He did not use it in his Will, which is the only evidence presented for him here.

The Will identifies his surviving wife only as "Nancy". There is no evidence of her surname, particularly no evidence that it might be "Hacker". Given this, if no other source is found, Nancy Ann Hacker should be detached from this profile of John Claypool.

If it is correct, as her profile claims, that Rachel Scott Claypool did not die until 1785, she would have to be the mother of any children born before that date, not the anonymous Nancy, whom John Claypool could not have married until after that date. Nancy may have to be changed to "Unknown".

Further reseach is required.

Claypool-14 and Claypoole-103 appear to represent the same person because: I just realized that we have a duplicate here, as I had the spelling with the e at the end I didn't catch it when I created them.
