Have you had your autosomal DNA tested at ancestry.com or 23andMe?

If you've previously had your (or someone in your family) autosomal DNA tested at ancestry.com or 23andMe, FamilyTreeDNA is currently offering a free autosomal transfer.  You upload your raw data (they explan how to do that).  They will then give you a 'sneak peek' at your top 20 matches.  If you want access to all of your matches and all of their resources, you can either pay $39 (reduced from $69, so a great deal) or get four other people to transfer their data (they don't have to pay, they just have to transfer data) and you get full access for FREE!

I highly recommend getting your results transferred from ancestry and/or 23andme to FamilyTreeDNA. You can then use the FamilyTreeDNA information at DNAGedcom.com, which will get you started on being able to locate/research triangulated groups and map chromosomes.  It's much easier than you think, with free software available from GenomeMate.com.  You also can upload your results (again recommended) to Gedmatch.com, another free site.  If you are taking DNA tests and aren't familiar with these sites, you're missing out on some wonderful tools to be able to identify common ancestors with others.

I think this will only work on v3 chips from 23andme (ancestry and health).  Recent 23andme users that have v4 chips (ancestry only) are not compatable with the FTDNA transfer system due to the reduced number of SNPs.
The good news is 23andMe testers with V2, V3, or V4 results can upload to www.gedmatch.com for free and then enter their GEDmatch ID on their DNA Tests page in WikiTree.   23andMe testers should suggest the same to all their matches so they all can see their matches with those who tested with Familly Finder and AncestryDNA (who have also uploaded to GEDmatch).

Ooopps!  I just set a new "question" about this.  Sorry for the duplication.  http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/105723/transfer-ancestrydna-23andme-tests-familytreedna-database

Darlene, have you reached your 4 participants (in order to get the $39 fee waived)?  Is that the link you provided?  If you have reached the goal, I'm waiting to hear if Kitty Smith needs my computer to help her out!  Thanks!

Not even one person responded. That's fine, as I just wanted to let people know about it. But I was surprised that no one signed up.

Darn!  Aaron Markworth is correct.  I got this notice when I tried to upload:

  • Only Ancestry DNA raw data files from Ancestry.com & Relative Finder V3 raw data files from 23andMe are accepted.
Please re-download your file and try again.

Phooey!

First of all for 23andme this only works out if you have used the V3 chip, FTDNA isn't being able to use results from the V4 chip.

Secondly I'd like to ask where we draw a line here in this forum between information (and informing others about good offers for DNA tests) and multi-level-marketing? Is WikiTree independent from all companies that offer B2C DNA tests or does WikiTree have a partnership with one (or more) of them? To me it seems there is a strong willingness here to promote products of FTDNA for whatever is the reason behind it (probably each user has it's own motivation).

It would be great if someone of the moderators/admins could explain how WikiTree is standing on neutrality towards those companies or not. I know that WikiTree is a free service and that advertisements are used to finance WikiTree but it would be nice if someone with knowledge can outline how far the cooperations with those companies goes.

As with all web services I think the consumer would like to have clarity about this especially when it comes to consumer advices. We all want those advices to be free of any monetary or other influence and based on the consumers/users own best experience.

@Darlene: Hope you don't see this as a criticism of your own person or your motivation to post this information, your post is merely a trigger for me to ask.

Andreas,  I don't think Darlene's 'promoting' FTDNA at all.  She's just informing people about their options.  For people interested in using DNA for genealogy it's really helpful to know what choices they have.  No one at WikiTree is receiving 'any monetary or other influence' from FTDNA.  This has nothing to do with multi-level-marketing.

Please do see my last line, repeated here:

"@Darlene: Hope you don't see this as a criticism of your own person or your motivation to post this information, your post is merely a trigger for me to ask."

I haven't said that Darlene is "promoting" FTDNA, so please don't interprete my answer in such a way. I asked a valid general question and as a "reward" I get 3 negative votes?

Is it forbidden at WikiTree to ask critical questions? Am I "punished" with negative votes because of that?

Actually it's my opinion that WikiTree should have a separate category for "News/Announcement" like the one by Darlene and others. These aren't questions at all, yet it clearly states at the top "Ask a question" and has the button "Answer" at the bottom. So if posts deserve a negative vote then it's post that aren't questions but I guess unless such a new category of "News/Announcement" exist (it may exists, I'm still new to WikiTree) we have to life with the "Ask a question" function being misused to inform people about things that most likely all of already know from various great DNA genealogy blogs like the once from Blaine, CeCe and Kitty and others, from ads that we're being served here (and on other websites) to finance WikiTree and from general targeted emails from these companies.

I do welcome those people that downvoted my answer to explain to me why they think it's a useless post.

I've posted a separate question to promote the idea of a separate news/announcement section here. So you can also leave your comment there, maybe more appropriate than in this thread: http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/108450/can-we-build-new-section-g2g-that-allows-news-announcements
