Hi Valerie,

I looked at your profile and saw that you entered several family members.  Good Job!!!

I'm pretty new to genealogy so I can't offer much in the way of help on how to go about doing research, but I have discovered that WikiTree is chock full of really, really nice people who do have incredible knowledge of those things and will be more than happy to share it with you.

What I do know is that there are lots of things you can do on WikiTree and (unless I'm wrong, which I well might be) there isn't any "next" - you can do things in any order you want to.  Some of these things are:

  • You can add more family members
  • You can add biographical information about family members
  • You can add 1 or more photos to your family profiles
  • You can check to see who else is working on the same last names as your family members or the countries they came from
  • You can click "My WikiTree" in the menu at topp right and then select "Watchlist" to see a list of all the people whose profiles you have entered.  You can select an option there to see potential matches and compare any that look like they might be the same person as your family member.  That seems soooooo exciting to me - I haven't found any yet, but can't wait to meet people here who share some of my ancestors!

From your question, you sound like yet another of the wonderful people I've encountered here - WELCOME TO WIKITREE!!!!!   I've only been here a little less than a month, but am absolutely thrilled with what the people here have done - what an incredible gift to the world!

Hi Valerie,

There's always a lot to do here once you get started!

Part of what makes WikiTree so cool is that it's part family tree, part encyclopedia. If any of your relatives have interesting stories, write up a biography for them!

Check out our Volunteers Needed category for ideas on how to contribute to the community, or have a look at our Project directory to see if there is a research group you'd be interested in joining.

Our Global Family Reunion project is working on connecting everyone on WikiTree into the big tree. You could try to connect yourself, or ask for help getting hooked in.

The Photo of the Week contest is a fun project to get involved with, either nominating or voting on photos. Profile of the Week is another great project, whether you submit your own profiles for the contest, or just read about the great stories of others and cast your vote.

Thanks for joining WikiTree, and I hope you enjoy our community here!

I think you can merge the two profiles for Arie Hale.  Unless they are twins with the same name, birthday and death date, the profiles must be for one person.  I initiated the merge for you.  If you look at the bottom left of one of their profiles or select the drop down box on the top right of your screen and select merges and then merges waiting on action by me you will find this proposed merge.  It's fairly self-explanatory but if you have any problems with it just post another question.  Good luck!

First is try to find and add sources. One place to look is FamilySearch https://familysearch.org/. Just take it slow, be accurate, and learn what you are doing. Do not fall into the trap that I fell into and try to take on too much because it is so much easier to try to manage too many profiles than it is to reduce your watchlist later. Finding facts and lost relatives can be fun and addicting just be careful and keep everything accurate. There is plenty of help here if you do get stuck. Also be aware that even with Census and other official documents there may be errors on spelling and dates so you could find several different spellings and birth dates in differend documents.
