Can you help write biographies for the Filles du Roi? [closed]

The Filles du Roi project has maintenance categories for profiles that need a bit of help or improvement. One of these categories is "Filles du Roi Needs Biography."

If you have a special interest in any of these women, or Quebec or Canadian history, or just like writing biographies, please help out!

Once a biography is written, remove the category and post a link to the profile here so we can collaborate to polish it up, admire your work, and choose some profiles to nominate for Profile of the Week.

Thanks everyone.

Cancelled, transferred to answers.
I have written a new bio on Marie Barbant-2's profile. Had a hard time deciding what to do with the bio that is already there.
I would love to help in this project as time allows.
Marie Brabant-2 was not a "fille du Roi" according to Silvio Dumas's book of standards.
She cannot be... she was born in Nouvelle-France

Madeleine Tetu, Filles du Roi (c. 1641 France - 1703 Quebec).

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tetu-5

I will now work on a biography for Madeleine.

Cheers, Jim

Anne Talbot, fille du roi, immigrated to Québec in 1670. She brings with her an assets estimated to 300 pounds + 50 pounds from the King. She was born on July 31, 1651and baptized August 1st 1651  in St-Macloud, archidiocese of Rouen, Normandy, France. She was the daughter of late Eustache Isaac Talbot and Marie De Lalande. A first contract of marriage past September 13 1670 to Jean Barolleau is cancelled. She contracted another marriage before notary Frerot on October 23, 1670  and marries again on Novenmber 2, 1670 in Ste-Famille Parish, Boucherville, QC to Jean Gareau dit Saint-Onge born about 1643 in Ste-Marguerite,Larochelle, Aunis, France son of Dominique Gareau et Marie Pinard. He died and was burried on June 6, 1713 in Ste-Famille, Boucherville, QC. Anne died in August 1740 and was burried on August 4, 1740 in Ste-Famille Parish, Boucherville, QC, age 89 years. The couple gave birth to 15 children, six boys and nine girls. Anne Talbot is my seventh great grand mother.

One comment on the currency: Her monetary assets would have been livres, not then-English pounds. Probably best to leave that untranslated. (The English pound sterling has been estimated to be exchangeable for anywhere between 8 and 11 livres tournois during the 16th and 17th centuries.)

Ross is quite correct. The proper term instead of "Pounds" would be "livres" and more pricisely "Livres tournois!. Better not to translate at all.
Anne Talbot's name appears into the most researched book on the "Filles du Roi" by Silvio Dumas and his team. See: http://www.ourroots.ca/page.aspx?id=3640007&qryID=f2dfe30d-a4b3-4cfe-ac3f-993f0bb47ca1 page336.

This is a free $ site on line. The description is short but to the point and clarifies whether or not a profile is or not a "Fille du Roi."
Everytime that I come across a Fille du Roi, - and there are several amongst may ancestors -  I make a point at identifying them as such and place a link to Silvio Dumas's book and text about them.

I certainly will continue so.
Thanks Gaston for helping the Filles du Roi.project.
Merci du lien Gaston.  :D

I would be more than happy to help with project, as I have more than a dozen direct Filles du Roi great grandmothers in my personal tree. I have completed several Filles du Roi profiles already here on Wikitree, and would be happy to help with more.  Please let me know who needs more research and/or what else I can do to help with the Filles du Roi project. Sincerely, Yvette Bergeron.

I've taken a shot at editing [[Chiasson-26| Louise Chiasson]], who showed up on your list for Filles du Roi_Needs_Biography and Filles du Roi_Needs_Sources.

Since this is my first Filles du Roi edit & I've never studied the French language, I'd appreciate a close look and feedback on how it can be improved.

Thanks - Jim

Hi Jim,

Sorry, your work is pretty good, but you picked one who was not actually a Fille du Roy, she and her first husband emigrated from France to Acadie first, and she moved to Canada colony after his death.

Bone up on your French, and take a look at  http://www.migrations.fr/700fillesroy.htm#C

Very useful, has all sorts of document images linked, like marriages etc.

 Danielle,

Excellent! Thanks for the feedback (and for that excellent reference)!

Even though multiple sources, including both internet & published sources, indicate Louise Chiasson was one of the "Filles du Roi" there were inconsistencies in the logic. Placing her as joining her husband in Acadia until his death there resolve the conflicts.

Thank you!

Danielle,

Louise Chiasson is on our list...

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Filles_du_Roi/List_A-C
I know Guy, but research done after Silvio Dumas' book was published indicates she could not be such.  https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Chiasson-26  is the profile in question, I put a note at the top with this data and source.
I had a look at Denis Beauregard list and she is not on...

http://www.francogene.com/gfan/gfan/998/fdr.htm

I think Denis, a well known genealogist can be trusted :)

Should we remove her as Fille du Roi ?

Having spent some time poking with Louise Chiasson's data, I'm inclined to agree with Danielle. The inconsistencies that arise if she were one of the  ''Filles du Roi'' are resolved if her husband travels to Acadia in 1665 with the intent that she join him a year later. And that is the case that

http://www3.sympatico.ca/michel.chiasson3/michel.chiasson3/AGUYONA3.htm

makes rather compellingly.

I'll revise the English imput accordingly if you agree.

I have to agree with Danielle and Jim.  As her husband signed a contract to come to New France, and with a proxy from her husband, she gave away their property to come to Quebec, she cannot be a Fille du Roi.

I will remove her from the Filles du Roi project.
already removed the label on her, ppp should come off also.  Dumas is taken as a ''final authority'' on the subject by many, but there has been more research since he did his work.
Fichier origine also does not label her as a Fille du Roy, and gives some more data on her first marriage, links already entered now.  The name of who she ceded property to in France is also given, not what was recorded before.
PPP removed - Quebecois Project Box removed and added the Canada,Nouvelle-France Sticker.

Hello Danielle & Guy: The American group: Filles du Roi Society http://www.fillesduroi.org/ include Louise Chiasson, but the PRDH do not, so I would agree with you both. Jim LaBossiere

Just noted today that the http://www.migrations.fr/700fillesroy.htm#C

also have posted a red warning that she is no longer considered a Filles du Roi, so I am sure we are correct in doing this. Jim

Hello fellow descendants of Filles du Roi or at least those interested in them. I am descended from at least 35 Filles du Roi, all of whom are direct GG grand mothers of various levels. I would love to help write some biographies for them.  I am in the process of finding their Fichier Origines or PRDH source material where it exists. This web site: http://www.migrations.fr/page%20d'accueil.htm  is also a wealth of information about them and the Fille à marier.

Thank you, Jim Labossiere

Hi Jim,

we would be glad if you join the group.  Please visit the Project page

We have a list of the Filles du Roi and Maintenance categories you can work on.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Filles_du_Roi

Hello Group: I will take on doing the Bio and upgrade sources for  Élisabeth Roy as she is one of my 8X GG grand mothers.

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Roy-1167&action=edit

Sorry if this is not in the correct place. I am quite new to this site and still learning. Should this have been a new category? Thanks, Jim

hi Jim, on G2G you have to copy the URL of the profile to make it accessible, unless it's part of an original question.  Welcome to the fun.

Hello Group: My first attempt at a Filles du Roi biography is ready for your critique. Please see Elisabeth Roy.

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Roy-1167&action=edit

Thanks, Jim

Hello fellow members of the Fille_du_Roi Project:  I write biographies a little bit different than a number that I have seen.  Mine are more of a story narrative than a point form data list.  Before I proceed with any more, I will wait to hear some feed back on my Elisabeth Leroy (Roy) bio.  I am ready to go on Madeleine Tetu, one of my 7X GG grand mothers.
Hi Jim,

did a few corrections, mostly place names that were showing anachronisms, meanwhile I suggest you go look at how to do inline sourcing, since that is something we want to do as much as possible.  A list of sources at the bottom of the bio is never quite as easy to figure out as the inline sourcing, since that points directly to which source you got it from.
Many thanks to Danielle and Guy for checking my Bio of Elisabeth Roy and fixing a few things. I have reviewed the changes and see what I needed to do. As I am quite new to Wikitree and all of the many complexities, I am still learning, although very fast and I really appreciate the tips, comments, and corrections. I will see what I can do to learn how to include inline references that one usually sees in factual documents.

Okay group. So, I have figured out how to use the inline source references. It may look neater for other users, but OMG, does it ever look awful in "EDIT" mode. I keep an off line copy of my BIOs and sources on MS Word so I can easily copy, paste, but is it ever easy to make a mistake. Totally syntax driven. Good thing I used to know how to do code and program. I believe I have proofed my work and it seems okay, but always appreciate more experienced people to have a look.

I will now work on Madeleine Tetu's Bio. https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Tetu-5

Cheers, Jim

ok, you have several sources under number 1 which should be separated out, since they are not in fact all one source.  There's also a trick you can use to make them look better in sources section, using <ref>[  ]</ref> rather than <ref>  </ref>, with the link to wherever at the very beginning, a single space after it and whatever description of the link is appropriate after.
Jim,

In order to help hou, I have done some changes and add-ons to Madeleine Testu's profile, adding sources and linkis. I hope it is of some help.

I suggest the change of "Tetu" to "Testu" - as it was most likely how she was baptised. See the references in text field.

As of now, I am descended directly from 32 FdR and have another 24 in my family tree. I use the Yves Landry book (in French) for information on the names and backgrounds of the women.  It certainly does help me to read French. At this point, I am just trying to get the low-hanging easy fruit but I will be exploring more deeply their stories when I return from vacation at the end of January.  A number of books in French already exist that "tell the story" behind the names and dates. I hope to be accessing them at that time. In addition a number of them married soldiers from the Carignan-Salieres regiment.  Interestingly there was a great deal of migration between the 1620s and the arrival of the FdR.  Will check in when I return.

hi Susan, welcome to the project.  The filles du roy came from 1663 to 1673, Carignan-Salières regiment came around 1665 to 1668, lots of them chose to remain, and they almost had ''first-dibs'' with the filles du roy.  The Filles du roy who married officers actually received more than the 50 livres received by the others, like double.

I would love to assist in the project. I am at last count descended from 62 Filles du Rois (and from Antoinette Meunier six separate times!)
