I am searching for John Fox's parents, he was born in 1840, Moreton, Staffordshire, UK

I am at a brick wall as to the exact parents of John Fox as there does not seem to be a record of his birth in Moreton, Staffordshire on the date written on the census.

I think his brother may have been called Joseph Peter Fox.

Also I can find no other information on him after the 1881 census.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Have you found the children in 1891 census?  I have found them in 1901, 1911, but cannot find any of them in 1891.

Have you got John Fox's marriage certificate?  This should give his father's name and occupation, which could make searching for him before 1881 census a little easier.

1871 census gives John Fox place of birth as Morton, Shropshire.  Have you looked for birth records there?

Thank you Margaret. Much appreciated.

I have not yet got their marraige certificate, true, it will give me more information.
Sorry to ask again, but have you found any of the children in 1891?  They would have been to young to fend for themselves, aged between 9 and 13.

If you haven't found them, they may possibly be in an institution, where often only initials were given.  This would be a likely scenario if the parents had died.

Thank you for this Wayne. I will recheck.

John Fox seems to have been born in the country then moved to Hammersmith where he married and had a family in 1876.

He then disappears off the census after 1881. I am not sure where he and his wife Annie went.
I don't think this is the same family, Wayne. John and Sarah Fox also appear in 1881 census, with daughter Annie, born in Ogley Hay, living in West Ham. John was a chemical worker by 1881.

Thank you everyone.

Yes the John Fox, who worked in the asylum was the person. That would have been a hard job in those days!!!

One of his daughters is my gg grandmother.
Did she work in an asylum as well?

There was an Ivy Emilie Fox registered to vote, resident at Holloway Sanatorium between 1929 and 1939.

She appears to have died in Ashford Hospital in 1957.

Margaret
I do not think she worked in an asylum, my g grandmother Ivy Emilie Fox was a nursery nurse from what we know and what was on her census and birth cert.

I am not sure if she was in the Sanatorium, I think I did see that when I was looking at one stage, but I was not sure if again the dates matched with what I know.

She went to live with her sister in Ashford.

Thank you for this.
Regarding the children, I do know know what happened in the 1891 census, or whether the parents died. All I do know is they are alive and healthy in the 1911 census, and one is married with children.

Thank you
