My Grandfather , Charles Graham appears in this 1940 census living with his brother-in-law.
First, I can't really grasp the full relationship here, some facts my mom knows:
-
Her dad died when she was very little
-
She remembers an Uncle Charles Cripps, and aunts Johanna and Catherine
That led me to this census record which seems like a clear hit to me. Even the street (St Anne) was recognized. Some interesting facts from this census:
-
He's listed as married, but she isn't in the home. My mom never knew he was married prior to getting together with my grandmother, so this was an interesting find. Knowing our family though, this is pretty much par for the course.
-
He's Brother-in-law to the head of household.
-
A mother in law, Anna Meier, lives there but her husband doesn't
-
I also found records for the marriage of Charles Cripps and Catherine Meier.
So I have a bunch of questions.
-
I'm reading this as Charles Cripps was the brother of whatever female Cripps Charles Graham married. But.... I can't find any record of a sister cripps anywhere, and no applicable marriage record. So what was the sister's name?
-
Alternatively, how would Charles Cripps be listed if he was actually brother-in-law to Catherine? Is there a word for your wife's brother in law other than brother-in-law? This means maybe instead of a cripps he married a meier, no record of that either though.
-
I can't find a solid census record for Charles before this point, there was no 1935 NYC census either, where was he?
I would love any insight that can be offered here. In the wikitree profile I have a mother of "Anna McCarthy" becuase that was listed in a baby book and it was in the GEDCOM I transferred form ancestry, but I have reasons to think that's probably not true, and maybe his mother is actually the Anna Meier from this census? On ancestry I found two marriage records that make sense date-wise for Charles Graham, but neither list a wife, which is weird, I might just have to pay to get both of the certificates to see if it clears anything up, but $30+ for a maybe is a tough pill right now.
Thanks!
