How do I make the most of Naturalization records?

Hi all,

I recently found what I believe to be the official naturalization record for Bryan/Bernard May in Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio in 1886. While finding this record is great, I was disappointed to find that it only mentioned where he was born, which country he came from and the official date of his naturalization. Is it me or is there usually more on this? Would I be able to find actual records of his children and wife's naturalization records whether or not, they just became citizens through him?

Thank you for your help

Mike

Michael, what year is the immigration? Are you looking at an index card ? What state? Maybe I can help you more. Sometimes there is a case file number that card will give you to get the rest of the paperwork. The full paperwork may not necessarily be online but in a county courthouse.
Hi Maggie,

Thanks for your comment. As for immigration year, the Mays most likely came from Liverpool to New York between 1878 and 1882. It is most likely 1880 but I am not sure. exactly what year. The naturalization a would have been for Youngstown, Mahoning, Ohio.

Thank you,

Mike

Between 1802 and 1906, any court in the county could naturalize a citizen.  Each court had its own rules and fees.  The information you have may be all there is.

The Basic Naturalization Act of 1906 standardized the requirements for naturalization.

I also found a naturlization record for my Grandfather and it had just the same information that you found.  It is another source for the profile and you are using it as such, that is the best you can do with it, but it does provide information for the narrative portion of the biography.  The profile is a good one and the only thing I can see right now that could improve it is if you made some minor changes to make it fit the Style guide as seen here

If you write a county courthouse ask for the packet which is the complete record. Some list all the family members and where and when they were born!
