Is their a way to get free DNA testing or is it all paid. I really don't have the money to do this.

In ten years or less, you can expect that whole DNA testing will drop to around 1-10$ per genome. In the next five years or so, you can expect that whole exome testinging will drop to rates low enough that there will be free-to-use services. Might even become part of basic and routine medical care services like doing blood chemistry analysis.

There are DNA projects out there that are willing to pay for testing for candicates from specific lines of interest to them, particularly Y DNA (male surname lines).  You can find a current list and how to contact the group in the list at ISOGG.

How much is the cheapest one.
The military started taking DNA back in the late 1990s, but as usual won't share the information or have any documentation in your medical records when you transition out.  They also don't like doing the swab thing, they enjoy sticking needles in your arm and taking it out the painful way.

Chris, a Family Finder test at www.familytreedna.com costs $99 USD plus Delivery about $10.

If you are wanting a yDNA or mtDNA they are dearer.

  • Family Finder for genealogy to approx 5-6 generations
  • yDNA follows father's line
  • mtDNA follows mother's line
The least expensive regular price for a DNA test is $59 plus about $6 to $9 postage for the Y-DNA12 test from Family Tree DNA.  You can at a later time run more tests on your DNA in storage inorder to upgrade to 37 markers (highly recommended upgrade and costs an additional $99) or a mtDNAPlus test (well recommend and costs $69) or a Family Finder test (recommended and costs $99.)

Hey Chris,

Unfortunately they are all for pay (unless you go the route Colin suggests, but that won't get you anywhere near your genealogy answers!)

Check out what the WikiTree DNA Project has listed for DNA Tests.  DNA is a new and exciting way to Genealogy!

I Agree with the others BUT wanted to add an exception. There are some cases I've seen where genealogy groups will come up against a brick wall with contention between different theories. To resolve their questions, several will get together and agree to pay for testing to be done on any known direct male heir that will come forward. For example, one of my ancestors from the mid 1700's John "Jack" "Rockhouse" Martin from Danbury, Stokes County, North Carolina has several theories as to who his parents were, but no documented facts. There is a group offering to pay for testing on any male Martin that can show descent from John "Jack", if they will be allowed to use the results to compare against other Martins. It rare, but I have seen it... so get your lineage traced back as far as you can by traditional methods and then see what you can find from there. It's a long shot, but like WikiTree, it's free! There is a free way to get your DNA done in the US.  The University of Michigan is doing DNA research.  If you allow them to use your DNA for their research, they will mail you the kit and then send you a file with your DNA to upload on one of the genealogy sites for matching.

Unfortunately you can't properly compare with other labs.  See:

http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/262136/genes-for-good-may-now-work-as-a-23andme-file-opinions-please

Because GenesForGood should not be uploaded to GEDmatch, their results should not be used to confirm ancestry in WikiTree.

I think you may be able to up load GenesforGood to Gedmatch. .If I am reading this info correctly.  On GedMatch you go to upload and click GENETIConcept and there at the top of the page is states GEDmatch raw DNA upload utility. Just below that there is a link (detailed upload instructions) which takes you HERE  When reading the information  there is talks about how they assign kit number's .  It states that  genes for good receives  "G" kit numbers and GENETIConcept receives "E" kit numbers.

With this information being listed here It may be that they are now taking genes for good tests.  I will know soon my kit is here so we will see in about 3 months or less.

Hello Mel,

Please read

Genes For Good is not good enough for confirmation of ancestry.

Along the line of of Phillip's answer, if you have done your genealogy and are a direct ancestor of a Revolutionary Patriot and have a male sibling, first cousin, father or who is also willing to undergo the Y-DNA testing with you I would be happy to inquire with the NSDAR DNA Group on FTDNA and see if there is anyone who might be willing to assist and how that would work.  Again, in all probability you would have to be willing to share the results freely with the person/group who paid for the testing.

As Lisa Franklin pointed out, there are free DNA tests (usually Y-DNA) See http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:DNA_Scholarships
