Hello

My name is Allison R Smith and I am trying to find out about my grandfather Clyde H Matthews  who was born in April 1st of 1888 and past somewhere in the 1970's  he was drafted in 1917/18 he was born in Grand Rapids Michigan who's father was Frederick Matthews born in 1856 in Pennsylvania that's about all the informaiton that I have on these people except I know that Clyde was a hardwhere sales man thank you to any who help me find this information

Clyde Herbert Mathews the happy wonderer.

On his WW1 draft registration card he writes born Dec 2 1890,on others he was

born April 1 1888.His Social Security death record # 568-12-3657 says April 1 1888

The Government nexer lies Ha Ha Ha.He dies may 27 1983.In Glendale California.

Somewhere around 1900=1912 the Family moves too L.A.County California,his

father  Fred A Mathews ,Mother Harriet Moulton,Will send more.

Clyde Herbert Mathews marries Goldyn Jeanne Kerr June 25 1912, Her father

James Will Kerr ,Mother Ella Graham.Goldyn dies 1928. On Sept 12 1932 he

marries Ruth R. Senger L.A County California her Father David B. Senger ,mother

Martha Click.. In 1940 Census he has 2 children Jeanne age 16 and William age

6.Girl was probably by first wife,boy by second.

Now you know where he has been Hiding.Michigan too California.

Go to https://www.familysearch.org/hr/search and type in his name (FN: Clyde H, LN: Matthews) and Birth: Michigan 1885-1890 and you'll see that there were 5 Clyde H Matthews born in Michigan in that time period. 3 of them died before 1895, so that leaves 2. Clyde and his Father show up in San Francisco, California in 1900 (1890 records were lost in a fire) Then 1920-1940 he is showing as being in LA, California. He died May 27, 1983 in California.

Apparently his Mother died between 1888 and 1900 and he and his Father moved West. (A Little more searching should tell the tale) Then his Father remarried between 1900 and 1910 as Catherine is shown as his Father’s Spouse in 1910. Then Clyde must have married between 1910 and 1930 because in the 1930 Census he's listed as "Widowed". He then remarried between 1930 and 1940 because his Spouse is shown as Ruth in the 1940 Census with a daughter and son. Now logic says if he was living alone and Widowed in 1930, the 16 year old Daughter was either not his and adopted when he married her Mother, Ruth... Or is not Ruth's and was living with another Relative (likely her Grandparents) in 1930...

Now obviously I've left some gaps, there should be a 1920 Census, First Marriage Record, First Wife's Death Record, Children's Birth Records, etc etc. Some say "Give a man a fish," some say "Teach a man to fish" I prefer to give a little AND teach a little.
