What you should have done is contacted the profile manager with your information before making changes like that.  You may have created a duplicate profile because you could not see the name already there and there could be a reason that the privacy setting is set so that it is not visible unless you are on the trusted list.  Ohter than adding sources or making basic grammer changes it is always better to ask the manager first.

I noticed a few duplicates around this group of profiles and proposed some merges.
I can see a problem here aside from the one about duplicates.  Dale, I love your advice that expresses the spirit of collaboration we strive for here, but in this case ...

It's hard to contact the profile manager of a "private" anybody, since you can't get to the profile page for the private person.  As a result, you don't know who the profile manager is, let alone have a link to be able to send them a private message.

I suppose you could write to the manager of person whose page you are on when you see the listing of the private relative - if that person is not also the manager of the private person, then he/she should at least be able to see the page of the private person to get the name of the profile manager.

This is in no way meant to condone the creation of duplicate records, though - I am in full agreement with Dale and Robert on that score.

Betty, welcome to WikiTree!  I'm sorry you're having to start out encountering this glitch - this is really a fantastic site and the people I've met here are the greatest.  I'm sure you'll feel the same way, once this little hiccup is cured.

If you look at my profile everyone is listed as private and I am the manager  of all of them.  The reason they show as private is the privacy is set to Red because most of them are still living so it is a safe bet that the manager of the profile that is also the manager of the private profiles, besides she wanted to add a spouce to that profile and there was already one on there, she just could not see their name.  That would mean that she hould still contact the manager of the profile she can see to check out if they knew about the spouce.  If anyone wanted to add my parents or spouce they would be creating a duplicate because they are all already on here so it would be a good idea to check first.
Interloping into a Private status is more than a hiccup.  Private MUST be respected or this site will crumble.
Keith, here is a variation: there are 2 dups of the "private spouse" with no  profile manager; I have already set those 2 to merge. (They were also unsourced and I found the source by working on an unsourced who turned out to be his spouse.)

But when I click 'remove spouse' on wife's profile to remove the "private spouse" there is no "o" to check on page it takes me to. What to do??
Got me there Marj... I'm not sure.  I'll see what I can discover.
Keith, there was no profile manager.
