I have been trying to trace my g grandfather John Stewart Pollock.  Unfortunately I have

no information about him except his marriage certificate states his age at 30 years  in June 1911 and his country of birth Scotland .  He married Mary Andrews(nee Burns) on

25/6/1911 In Johannesburg South Africa.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am an absolute novice at his.

There are lots of men named John Pollock who were born in Scotland.

Would you know the county and or city he was born in, in Scotland?

I think of Pollock as being a Polish surname and checked at surnamedb.com

They had this:

Pollak

This surname was one of the earliest German surnames into the United States of America, see below, and is associated with the period of Independence (1771 - 1783). It was also one of the earliest surnames in Europe, and were it not for the fact that many ancient registers and charters from the early medieval period are known to have been destroyed in the Second World War, it is probable that we would have discovered even earlier recordings. The name is national, and describes a former inhabitant of Poland. The origination is from the East Prussian 'Pol' (Pole) plus 'ak' meaning 'from', with Poland (the name) meaning 'the low land'. Their are many forms of the surname and these include Polak, Pollack, Pollach, Pohlack, Pollak, Polack, and Boelecke, the German dialectal variant.

There are a lot of good researchers on Wikitree and I expect that someone will be able to narrow down the search that you are seeking. Generally, a good way to trace back is to start with someone you know a lot about. That is, birth year and location, name of spouse, year and location of marriage (which you have shown), year and location of death. Take it back one generation at a time. Good luck in your quest!

My grandparents are Pollocks. My grandpa on my moms side is Samuel L Pollock. He was a Mormon and I have a lot of info on the Pollock side. He is from Ireland but I see there are some of his people from Scotland. If you want to give me a few names I can look in my books for you.

I see there is a John , David, Charles , Bricius de, Robert, anyway many ,, all the way back to 1080 ad. After that the pollocks seem to be from Northern Ireland. The spelling went from Pollok to Pollock in 1690

Hi Lorraine and welcome to WikiTree.  The web site you want for BMD and census information for Scotland is

http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/      There is in fact a Clan Pollock who were allies of would you believe Clan Maxwell.   I'll see if I can find anything on SP for you.

There were 21 John Pollock's born in Scotland from 1879 to 1880.   Good luck.
