Was John Alexander Maclachlan a golf professional?

I cannot find anything relating to my grandfather being a golf professional other than a link to Chicago. My dad Edwyn told me so much but it is proving to be extremely difficult to verify any of it.

Bet you don't know where John Alexander was born or when.

Alexander John McLachlan (1872-1956), lawyer, businessman and politician, was born on 2 November 1872 at Naracoorte, South Australia, son of Alexander McLachlan, grazier, and his wife Mary, née Patterson. He was raised in the atmosphere of a Gaelic-speaking family and workforce, and educated privately at Hamilton Academy, Victoria, and Mount Gambier High School, South Australia.

My name is Caroline and I’m researching my Scottish roots on my mother’s side, maiden name McLachlan. Father’s name Frank Mclachlan, brother to a John McLachlan Hugh McLachlan, Duncan McLachlan and a sister they all called Peg. All born in Culcabock Inverness, Scotland. John’s Son was called Edwin and he was a Major in the Army, also the info I have been given is that John was a golf professional who settled in Cheshire. Could this be a relation to you?
Do you have a birth year for Edwin? Was Edwin a Major during a particular war?
I asked the question some time ago and forgot all about it.

We appear to be related, Edwyn was my Father and  John his father, Peggy brought up my Dad when John went to America after his wife died. He returned to join the RAF in 1941.

After the war he became the resident golf professional @ Wallasey Grange GC on the Wirral NW England. He remarried to a lady called Margarite who died in Wallasey in 2001.
Hi Ian,

yes it seems we are related, second cousins in fact, I believe my mother met your Dad when she was very young and unfortunately only has a vague memory

Although she remembers visiting with her parent.

Very nice to make contact with you Ian!

You may want to read this article, which is too long to post here:                 http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/mclachlan-alexander-john-7404

He did play golf and bridge; here is part of 2nd last paragraph of the article:

His autobiography, McLachlan: An F.A.Q. Australian was published in 1948. Tall, burly and genial, he enjoyed golf and bridge, and was chairman of the South Australian Football League (1920-25).

Good find Frank but where does Chicago fit in?

Betty
I read the writeup about him that's in the Australian Dictionary of Biography, at    http://adb.anu.edu.au/biography/mclachlan-alexander-john-7404

There did not seem to be any indication of his being in Chicago in the article.

Frank
Inasmuch as there is no Chicago connection to be found so far, I'm wondering about the validity of the Australian John Alexander McLachlan with respect to being the person sought.

Would the anonymous person who originated the question have any birth year, marriage year or death year information? Name of spouse could help too along with location, that is to say, the country, county and or city at time of birth, marriage or death.
