Until today, I thought my grandmother was Mary Millard. Today I received in the mail the true copy of my mother's birth certificate. It shows her mother to be Beatrice Annie Millard, and I have changed it in my WikiTree. Anyone know of her? Thanks each. Angela Southward

Her parents were Zilpha (Zilpah) Downing b abt 1864 in Shillington Bedfordshire and James Millard b abt 1862 in Meppershall Beds. The were married in Q1 in 1882 in Beds.

Beatrice Annie (b abt 1886 Meppershall)  was :

living in Bedford and working as a cook in the 1911 census, (home of Thomas Pearson, 31 Shakespeare Road)

working as a house maid in Bedford at the 1901 census

at home with her parents in Meppershall in the 1891 census.

Siblings : Maud b abt 1884, Grace b abt 1889, Laura b abt 1894, Archie 1897, Hettie 1900.

(she was  one of 7 children of which 6 were alive in 1911)

Zilpha like many of the women and children in the area worked as a straw plaiter in 1891 (they made the plaits for straw hats)

James was an Ag lab in 1891, a builder, thatcher and ag lab in 1901 and a

Zilpha was living with parents William Downing (b abt 1830 in Flitwick) and Betsey (b abt 1831 in Shillington) in the 1871 census

Her father, William  was working as a coprolite labourer. This was an industry that employed hundreds in the area, I tried to paste a link but then lost this post so I'll try to write the web address www.shillington-history.org.uk/Pages/Coprolite_industry.htm

If it doesn't work I'm sure you'll find it on a google search
