Born in London in 1874.  Not very far back but I have no info at all. Pretty sad.

Hello Elizabeth and Welcome to Wikitree.

Where have you looked for John?

Have you tried People Search here on wikitree?  Use the 'Find' menu for that.

Have you  tried FamilySearch.org, its a free website with a large data base and a good place to start.  Here's a link to a quick search I did, most of these seem too recent but if you look through the pages you might find something.   https://familysearch.org/search/record/results?count=20&query=%2Bgivenname%3A%22John%20%20F.%22~%20%2Bsurname%3AHayes~%20%2Bbirth_place%3ALondon~%20%2Bbirth_year%3A1850-1940~

Come back to G2G with more questions, we are happy to help

Adding to this answer, John Frederick Hayes signed a "Short Service Attestation" with The Yorkshire Regiment in 1894. In the document, he states that he had previously served with The Middlesex Regiment, having purchased his discharge.

Searching for JFH in 1881 & 1891 has not been totalling revealing, however, I think it likely he was a scholar in St. Agnes Orphanage, Church Road, Leyton in 1881.
Thank you for this information. If a boy is listed in an orphanage, should I assume it is very unlikely that I can find no further ancestors?
The search will be much more difficult. First take a look at http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/LeytonStAgnes/ particulary the 1881 census. There were two other Hayes listed, maybe all related. If all have similar birth registration records then review all death records in that registration district as far back as the youngest birth. Correlate to marriages and cross check. You may be lucky.

John's Middlesex Regiment's, if they can be traced, may be helpful.
