Antique prints - painting a picture of our ancestors & their homes

Hi

recently, when researching our Irish ancestors we came across this wonderful web site that has old prints of many Irish towns.  For example, we were delighted to see a painting of Ballina, Mayo from 1841.  The very time one branch of our ancestors lived there.  There were others we enjoyed, too from all over Ireland, Scotland and England.

We added to our "picture" of where and how our ancestors lived using these images.

I hope that this is helpful to you.

Dale,

That website does have copyright restrictions:

That maybe so, but if you want a picture to post, ask the copyright owner's permission.  He just might give his consent.
I had another thought on this. This person may be claiming copyright on material that is surly public domain, if they are indeed antique prints. By the looks of this fellows website, he is trying to make a living by selling the actual prints. So, perhaps for a nominal fee he might consider the usage of these prints. It would be to his advantage to have his prints showcased on other websites, with a link to his site if someone would like to purchase it. Just my two cents.

Hi

Yes, I understand and thank you for pointing that out.  However, I was aware of  the web site owner's thoughts on this matter.

From his own web site:  Tab = "Use of Images"

Use of Images on this Website (copyright)

NEW - see www.ancestryimages.com - a free image archive for all the antique prints and maps shown on this website.

My antique prints and maps Website gets between 500 and 1000 visitors a day, and now contains several thousand images of old maps and prints. Because of this I have noticed that some of my images are appearing on other people's websites, and I even receive occasional requests to use the images!

I am quite happy for people to use images of my antique prints and maps on their own web pages as long as the use is non-commercial. Those running personal websites dealing with family history, genealogy, or other historical research etc. are most welcome to copy any of the map or print images for their own use, as are charity and non-profit organisations.

In return I would greatly appreciate a link back to my website, or a credit such as 'Image courtesy of antiqueprints.com'.

Also I suggest any images used are saved to your own server and not linked directly to on my website. (Images are removed after items are sold.)

Please contact me if any images are wanted for commercial purposes.

Thank you so much for your response.  That is my feeling on the matter. I believe it is also in keeping with WikiTree policy to add image citations on our profiles. Thank you again.
Thanks for your explanation, Dale. It's important that Wikitree members are aware of the conditions of use requested by the copyright owner.
Thanks Peter  Thanks Lynden

I see this as nothing different to any other resource and I agree completely, respect the copyright and acknowledge sources of everything in our research.
