Looking of the parents of Nicholas Phillips born some time around 1808 in England, He married Chloe Brand (unknown date) sometime around 1830 in Canada. Census records show that his religion was Quaker. Although, the members of his family were Methodist. I can't find immigration records or death records for Nicholas, but by 1881, Chloe/Clara was a widow and living in Georgina, York, Ontario. Children from this marriage are: Henrietta, Bithena, William, Robert, Margaret, Nicholas, Mary Ann, Wellington, Obadiah, Pheobe and Chloe.

Frank, how do you know this would be the correct record? According to Family Search there are over 2, 000 Nicholas Phillips born in England in 1808!
Maybe I picked the wrong one, but it was the first one that came up at familysearch.org so it seemed the most likely to me.

There may be a better way and maybe someone else can provide an answer that can be clearly substantiated.

Hi

If Nicholas was christened as a Quaker then his christening would appear in the non conformist registers rather than the "normal" christenings.  This may make it easier to narrow the list of possibilities.

Here is a link for you to explore:

http://www.bmdregisters.co.uk/

Having said that, I had a quick look at the non conformist registers and could not see a Nicholas Phillips born/christened around 1808 at all.

Good luck

Ancestry only has baptisms for 4 Nicholas Phillips born in the right timeframe+- 10 years The one baptised in Newhaven, one  in Cornwell who appears on later censuses, one in Devon whose death is recorded and one in Hertfordshire

Name: Nicholas Phillipps
Gender: Male
Christening Date: 5 Mar 1804
Christening Place: Much Dewchurch, Herefordshire, England
Father's name: James Phillipps
Mother's name:

Mary

Free Reg has just one.

County Pembrokeshire
Place Freystrop
Church name Parish Church
Register type
Baptism date 15 Dec 1809
Person forename Nicholas
Person sex M
Father forename John
Father surname PHILLIPS
Mother forename

Elizabeth

Of course there will undoubtedly be those who are not indexed.

The Nicholas Phillips baptised in Newhaven is just an indexed record so we don't know in what church he was baptised.

There are however two other children, Martha Jane (1802) and Sarah Frances (1804) baptised at the Countess of Huntingdon's Connection chapel in Newhaven. Their parents are also  a Sarah Frances and Nicholas Phillips. I've checked the images for 1809 and Nicholas is  definitely not in that register (there are only 5 baptisms between 1804 and 1812  Maybe the parents moved on.  The denomination isn't Quaker though  (it's a small evangelical sect )

Thanks Helen, that's great! I'm still looking too.
