It was nice to wake up this morning, watch the weather & learn that the hurricane is no longer heading for the Chesapeake Bay. It is still raining like crazy, but not much wind.

I hope everyone is looking forward to a great weekend......what's new this week?

Thank you Doug for starting the Weekend Chat this week.  The weather is Cold and Wet this weekend in Northeast Ohio and I am still cleaning out the RV preparing for the shutdown of the campground for the season next weekend.  I am also setting up a new work space in our home for both my Ham Radio as well as my offline research.  I am planning to do more research offline for the next few months so I may not be as active on WikiTree.  I am not leaving, just moving in a different direction.

Even recovering from a sore knee after last weekend we still found the time and motivation to buy a new car yesterday, nothing fancy, a KIA Soul, but it is big enough for us.
Enjoy the new car Dale. I spend a lot of time researching via other avenues, as well. Pop in every now & then, though. Have a great weekend.

Here (Twente, Holland) the weather is really nice, sunshine all day, hope your knee is feeling a bit better already Dale and yes thanks for starting the Weekend Chat Doug :)

This weekend we're going to help my mum again with painting and decorating her house , and hopefully get it all done and finished now

Enjoy the weekend everyone !

I see you have your hands full .....does he/she sleep on your bed?
Our daughter has her hands full indeed ..hahaha,.. and when she visits we have as well, he's a great dog, my daughter and our son in law decided a few years ago, when they found a place to live of their own, they wanted a cute ''little puppy'' :P

Cute he still is, the sweetest dog really, but quite enthusiastic (wild) and stubborn (why he has ears is Unknown) , acts like a toddler all the time and we call him LEO (Lomp En Onbenullig, don't know how to translate this, maybe Vincent can) (his real name is Ryko) He seems to think he still is this cute little puppy, so likes to sit on your lap and do all silly stuff puppies do, so very playful, a dog with a great sense of humor. We all love ! As you can see it looks as if he's having lots of fun , he's really smiling eeh ;)

Guess if we would let him he would love to sleep in our bed !
Bea,

Yes the knee is feeling better, in fact it felt so good that Wednesday I did some work around the house and promptly regretted it.  Sore knee again. I have enlisted some help for the major heavy work getting the camper ready for winter next week so I should not make it worse again.

Doug,

The car is nice, but the payment......  The reality is with the deal we got our payment is not too much more than what we were paying, but I no longer have to worry about bad brakes, bad tires, and a leaking gas tank.  I also have a 5 year 50,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty with roadside assistance included so for the next 5 years, at least, they will be fixing it and not me.

Glad to hear it was feeling better and yes we often tend to overdue it as soon as we feel better eeh and promptly we'll regret and have to suffer again :P so very wise you enlisted some help otherwise this could take quite some time to really heal . And congrats with the new car and having things fixed by others is always great especially with cars !

Here's the: top ten of I fixed it !, auto repairs by people without money or skills for a proper repair or mechanic

Bea,

It is sort of a trade off with the help, He is going to help me but today I provided the supervision and know how to fix his plumbing in his master bath. I am not a professional plumber, I was a CNC machinist for most of my working career, but I did make a very large quantity of pipe and tube fittings while working for Swagelok LLC for over 20 years so I do understand how the basic systems work together, and for that reason I could at least tell him what he needed to do.
Bea,

You reminded me that it's time to do indoor painting again around the house (Thanks a lot *sarcasm*). I painted the entire inside about three years ago and, because of dogs and cats, I need to do it again. I love the painting part. Love, love, love it. Hate the prep part. Inevitably, there is a spot I missed after washing out my paint brush. Most of the house is white or off white and the ceilings are white. Makes the whole upside down painting very strenuous and boring but my husband won't let me do purple on the ceilings. He's a spoil sport. I discovered the purple/white ceiling paint and now I'm as happy as a pig in slop. It goes on purple and changes to white so you can see where you painted.

My husband also discovered that he can turn fishing bobbers on his little lathe. I call it "When Hobbies Collide!" We're going to spin up a couple dozen and donate them to our woodturning club for their Christmas raffle. Yes, it's time to start thinking about Christmas presents that we need to make in the shop. Every Christmas I pick a tag off of the local mall tree and make a cherry doll cradle and throw in some clothes and toys and a cradle blanket for a little girl. I only have boys to buy presents for and I love shopping for girls. It's one of my weaknesses.

Lastly, I wanted to ask everyone to pray for those poor kids at Umpqua Community College. Two days ago a student went on a shooting rampage in Oregon and killed nine people and injured twenty more. It's just so very sad.

Betty

Dale,

Trade off is great , just like the ''ancient'' times, it's coming back I guess, in our town we have internet pages with people offering and asking for help with chores/jobs, in trade for the help you get , you'll help the other person with some other chore . So people who love gardening but hate painting in turn for a painting job done by a painter, will do the painters garden, and so on. It's a great thing and all for free :)

Betty,

You're welcome ;) I love painting as well and indeed the prep thing is not my thing either, my mum has a large house and a lot of stuff, so the prep is quite an ''horrific'' event :P, the ceilings now are white, the walls grey, (light and dark with some wallpaper in between) my husband is a painter , so he does most of the painting, we just today finished her kitchen area and tomorrow we will try and get the living room done as well.

That purple paint sounds great, so if I understand it correct while you're painting all painted parts are purple and when it's dry it's white ? Cooool and very handy !

Sounds like my husband, he loves working with wood as well, before he became a painter he was a carpenter, now working with wood is one of his many hobbies.

Guess the wood turning club will be very happy with the home made fishing bobbers for the raffle and indeed a few months and it's Christmas already, we first have Sinterklaas in Holland at 5 december :)

I saw it at the news, and watching the news nowadays is really saddening, all these refugees coming form Syria, Africa and many other countries arriving in Europe...so many terrible, horrible and sad things nowadays eeh...history is repeating over and over again I guess...so we really should pray for all these people ...we are so fortunate living in countries where there's no hunger and peace

Grand Duchess Olga Alexandrovna fleeing Joseph Stalin's regime moved to Ontario Canada. Her niece was the famous
Anastasia.

She was raised at the Gatchina Palace outside Saint Petersburg. Olga's relationship with her mother, Empress Marie, the daughter of King Christian IX of Denmark, was strained and distant from childhood. In contrast, she and her father were close. He died when she was 12, and her brother Nicholas became emperor.
In 1901, she married Duke Peter Alexandrovich of Oldenburg, who was privately believed by family and friends to be homosexual. Their marriage of 15 years remained unconsummated, and Peter at first refused Olga's request for a divorce. The couple led separate lives and their marriage was eventually annulled by the Emperor in October 1916. The following month Olga married cavalry officer Nikolai Kulikovsky, with whom she had fallen in love several years before. During the First World War, the Grand Duchess served as an army nurse at the front and was awarded a medal for personal gallantry. At the downfall of the Romanovs in the Russian Revolution of 1917, she fled to the Crimea with her husband and children, where they lived under the threat of assassination. Her brother and his family were shot by revolutionaries.
Olga escaped revolutionary Russia with her second husband and their two sons in February 1920. They joined her mother, the Dowager Empress, in Denmark. In exile, Olga acted as companion and secretary to her mother, and was often sought out by Romanov impostors who claimed to be her dead relatives. She met Anna Anderson, the best-known impostor, in Berlin in 1925. After the Dowager Empress's death in 1928, Olga and her husband purchased a dairy farm in Ballerup, near Copenhagen. She led a simple life: raising her two sons, working on the farm and painting. During her lifetime, she painted over 2,000 works of art, which provided extra income for both her family and the charitable causes she supported.
In 1948, feeling threatened by Joseph Stalin's regime, Olga emigrated with her immediate family to a farm in Ontario, Canada. With advancing age, Olga and her husband moved to a bungalow near Cooksville, Ontario. Colonel Kulikovsky died there in 1958. Two years later, as her health deteriorated, Olga moved with devoted friends to a small apartment in East Toronto. She died aged 78, seven months after her older sister, Xenia. At the end of her life and afterwards, Olga was widely labeled the last Grand Duchess of Imperial Russia.

Hi Chris,

You create profiles on such interesting people. How do you find your subjects? Are they ancestors or people of interest? Just curious.
I wanted to add Canadians for the most part that people were not aware of, I started with some people from the province I live in Alberta,Canada and went from there. A few of the people were actually asked about in questions.
Very nice!

Thanks to Bill's sterling efforts, Sir Thomas Slade's family tree is coming along nicely. (At least on his sister's side.) I wouldn't be surprised to see it connected to the main tree before the end of the month.

I have to admit that I am somewhat curious as to why Wikitree doesn't have separate fields for date and place of burial. Sometimes, that's all I can find for somebody. (And, even when I can track down a date and place of death, it can take me weeks or months.) Especially given that there's a whole cemeterist badge thing, I would have expected some place to note that kind of thing.

Hi all!

Has anyone ever prepared a rotisserie style chicken in a crock pot. A friend told me how to do it. I am trying it today.

Make a dry rub of salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder and paprika and rub it into the chicken.

Stuff the cavity of the chicken with celery and carrots.

Make a "stand" with balls of aluminum foil to keep the chicken off the bottom of the crock pot.

Cook on high for 4 hours.

Later I will let you know how it turned out.
by Amy McAndrews G2G6 Mach 3 (31.6k points)

It sounded quite mysterious , first had to look up what a crock pot was, it looks like a great way of cooking, but have none so can't try this at home (would have to get me a Crock pot first) So hope it all went well and you had a great meal!

Bea,

Run down to your second hand store for a good price on a crock pot. I am using mine almost every night during the hot weather. Cooks a meal and doesn't heat up the kitchen.

Betty
Bea. some areas use the term "slow cooker" more frequently than the term crock pot.  They are very handy to keep the kitchen cooler in the summer or to set a timer and have a hot meal ready for supper with only one dish to wash up.  The most modern ones now have an inset pot that can be removed and washed, instead of having to be careful and not get the electric units wet, as the first ones that were made had to be handled.

Ok I found a shop where they sell these crock pots or slow cookers, my husband will love it, he always is buying me electric devices with plugs for my birthday , so guess I'll have one in no time :P I already got this electric pizza pan electric gourmet  electric rice cooker and more of these electric kitchen ''gadgets'' . He really thinks every housewife should have them to make their lives easy (read he really likes these devices himself ! )

Hello everyone,

Being a Ranger, Mentor and other projects, and since I had spare time, I started a new project with a small group of wikitreers.

The project is called  [http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Grosse-Ile Grosse Ile Project].. This is a subproject of the [http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Canadian_History Canadian History project].

Grosse Ile is the name of the Quarantine Station of Grosse Ile.  The station was in operation from 1832 to 1937.  The island sits in the St.Lawrence River just in front of Montmagny and about 35 miles east from Quebec City.

Over 30,000 immigrants were medically checked, and over 10,000 of them died there. (mostly Irish).

But we will need help from others.  This is why I posted a question here:

Have a nice weekend everyone,

In the midst of the evening,

I see history come alive.

They walk and talk and travel far,

Families and Adventurers,

Step by step,

Mile by Mile.

They never knew my name,

Except a few,

But now I tell their stories.

The pirate, alleged,

The soldiers, affirmed.

The wives, girls and mothers,

The husbands and sons.

We have ranged far and wide,

And touched the high mountains.

We have farmed the dells,

And the river bottom-land.

As I reach though History,

In my minds eye I see,

A vision of Courage and Wisdom,

Of Family, Love and Laughter.

May we too be Blessed,

To ever be,

The Song of the Generations,

Sung with Love and History.
