Correcting errors for Peytons 849 & 861

A genealogist recommended a merge of Peyton-861 and Peyton-849, but I think 849 is the uncle of 861.  However both indicate a wife named, "Sarah West Patterson" and the siblings are very similar.

A second genealogist removed the father from 849 (Peyton-434..Maj Robert Peyton) but I don't understand why.

Peytons of VA II; pg 2 (2013) lists wife of Maj Robert Peyton as Mrs. Mary Keeble (assume widow) and children, including Robert, William (Peyton-861, I think) and 5 others.  But Wikitree's listing for Robert (Peyton-848) lists only two siblings (Elizabeth and Thomas).

So the questions:  Should Peyton-434 be restored as the father of Peyton-849?  Should the sibling list in "Peytons of VA II" for Peyton-848 be added (including Peyton-849)?  Which Peyton did Sarah West Patterson marry?  3 of the siblings listed for 849 are also names of siblings for 861 (which led to the merge request that I received).  The sibling set in Wikitree for 861 almost matches the set in Peytons of VA II (children of Robert Peyton-848).  What is the source of info for 849? (Peytons of VA lists no descendants for him).

Thanks for posting this David!  http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Peyton-434 is a Gateway Ancestor under the Magna Carta project. Guidelines for the project are to remove children not listed by Douglas Richardson's Magna Carta Ancestry or Royal Ancestry. William is not listed & was removed. Richardson also does not give Robert's wife Mary a surname (maiden or married). As I understand WikiTree guidelines, William could be reattached with the father/son relationship between William and Robert Peyton marked as uncertain. However, without primary source evidence that the maiden name of his wife Mary was Keeble, the profile for Mary Keeble should not be re-attached as Robert's wife.

Cheers, Liz

When in doubt it is always better not to merge.

An additional option which may be useful in many cases is to describe the issues in the narrative.  "A 2013 Peyton Genealogy <ref > Peytons of Virginia II </ref > shows Robert's wife as Mary Keeble.  (link to her profile if she has one).  However, no primary data have been found to support this."

Having such a note in the narrative answers questions in advance and helps protect the profile from unsupported additions and merges. It also encourages the reader to do some digging -- perhaps the reader will be the one who actually finds the appropriate primary data and makes a significant contribution to this tree!
