Why is the John Chadwick of Rochdale Assumed to be the John Chadwick of Malden?

Recently I was asked whether there was any documentary evidence connecting the John Chadwick of Malden in this biography with the John Chadwick who was baptised in Rochdale in 1601. I had to admit that I did know of any and that the association was based on his age. In 1680 John Chadwick was a witness in a court case and gave his age as 79. This implies that his birth date was either 1600 or 1601. A search of English records on FamilySearch.org gives three possible John Chadwicks born in 1601. They are John Chadwek bap. March 21, 1601 in Cheshire, father Robert Chadwek; John Chadwicke bap. April 19, 1601 in Rochdale, Lancashire, father Richard Chadwicke; and John Chadwicke bap. October 4, 1601 in St. Michael, Lancashire, father George Chadwicke.

The published genealogies all favor John Chadwick of Rochdale, but I cannot find any source that supports him over the other two possibilities. Is there a good reason for this choice that I have overlooked?

The data on FamilySearch is nowhere near complete.  Many parishes haven't been indexed at all, and in many others they skipped the early registers and started around 1710.
This means that there may be even more John Chadwicks born in the relevant time period that do not show up on FamilySearch.

I know this isn't the original source, but just the title leads you to believe ... David L. Arnaudo, ''Chadwick and allied families history : a history of the Chadwick and allied families of Rochdale parish, Lancashire; Watertown, Malden, Medford, Brookfield, Western and Warren, Massachusetts; Sheldon, Vermont and Brentwood, California'' (Alexandria, Virginia : D.L. Arnaudo, 2010

Probably has a lot to do with this memorandum found in "Remains, Historical and Literary, Connected with the Palatine ...," Volume 82 (1871), Chetham Society

http://tinyurl.com/nn9hyo4

If you get lost in the book, it's the Memoranda beginning at the bottom of page 1, and continuing to page 2.

It sounds like a great reference, but the only way to see it seems to involve a trip to Salt Lake City - 2000 miles away.
Part of the problem is that there were so many Chadwicks in the Rochdale area around 1600 and John was a very popular first name. It is not clear to me why one of them would choose to make the arduous trip to New England. He may have been a younger son who would not inherit and decided to try his luck in the New World. Of course, before the English Civil War it was not always healthy to be a Puritan in England.
I have this book on my to-do list for February, Henry. I'll check it and see if it has anything of use to us and copy any relevant info from it, assuming to provides decent sources!
Bobbie, I find it amazing that you have a to-do list for February. I have trouble making one for tomorrow. Are you close to Salt Lake City or do you have some other way to access this book? Thank you very much for doing this research and I look forward to learning what you discover.
Henry, I make an annual trip with friends to do research at the FHC. So my to-do list is collected throughout the year. I've looked to see if this item is available anywhere else locally and I don't find it, which may mean it has little or no value. But we'll see! The author seems to have penned several genealogies, so perhaps he does some quality work. Time will tell!

Hoping to resurrect this old question. Did anyone see a copy of the Arnaudo book? The summary of the book says it's about a John Chadwick who immigrated to Massachusetts in 1670?

I did Jeanie, I have a pdf copy that I can share. Send me a PM with your email and I can share it with you. I have *not* analyzed it or even used it yet, as it's been sitting in my "to do" pile - undone. You're welcome to it.

Likewise, if anyone else would like the .pdf file, PM me with your email address and I'll send it along.
Looking at it now, I remember thinking it wasn't terribly useful  - lacking in sources.
got it Bobbie, thanks.
Thanks for the nudge, Jeanie, forgot that I'd retreived it.

Is there a source for the 1680 court case in which John Chadwick states he is 79years old?
