The Manitoba Project and Collaborative Profile of the Week Present

Terry Fox (1958-1981)

In his short life of 23 years, Terry Fox inspired the Canadian people and the world with his courage as he made a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research.

If you don’t know who Terry Fox was, there’s a short Canada Heritage Minute you can watch.   There’s also a longer movie, “The Terry Fox Story”.

  1. Who was part of Terry’s family? His mother has died, and needs a bio, but it is probably sufficient to mention the other members of his family in his bio. I’ve already requested that his mother's profile be opened.
  2. Is there any chance of connecting his mother Betty Lou (Wark) Fox to the Global Tree?
  3. Why was Terry an inspiration?
  4. What did he do?
  5. What legacy did he leave?

Remember that keeping the question on the front page of the G2G is important to its success. Please post an answer here when you start to work on some aspect of the profile. This also eliminates duplication of work effort.

The Manitoba Project

The Manitoba Project, a sub-project of the Canadian History Project, strives to create and improve profiles for all kinds of famous Manitobans, including politicians, musicians, authors, etc. We also offer assistance to people who are researching Manitoba families.

Thank you

Yay! on this one for sure! What a great example to the youth of Canada! Mags
The profile for his mother Betty Fox is open and ready to be worked on also.
I would love to take on Betty Fox.
I've found the obit of Betty's mother, Sally. See http://passages.winnipegfreepress.com/passage-details/id-63647/name-Mary_Wark/

Her husband's name was John.
I'll add an Honours and Awards section to Terry's bio.
Go for it all, Thank you.
Husband and children have been added.  The children contributed to Terry's Marathon,  would they be classified as Notables also?
Looking good, Sally. I added a paragraph to the bio, Anne :) Betty has a Wikipedia entry but the children don't, so I would say they wouldn't be classified as Notables, but not being a member of the project, I'm not sure what the criteria is.
I also would not classify them as notables, but maybe someone from the project would like to chime in.
Betty, the mother already had the Notables logo on it before I started working on it.  Someone from the Notables Project put it there.  I am leaving it on there and if Terry had it on there, it should be put back.  I believe.

I agree with Mags - Terry Fox is a true inspiration to many Canadians!

I've added his death certificate and a link to his Find A Grave memorial as sources, and I'll try to make time this week to go to Port Coquitlam and get photos of his and his mother's headstones.

Erin that would be super.
Sorry about not getting the photos this week - the weather has been terrible when I had time to go! The next clear day when I have time, I'll head out there.
They'll make a nice addition to the profile, whenever you get to them Erin.

I added some of Betty's Wark ancestors if someone wants to try to connect from there. Manitoba and Ontario, then back into Ireland and England. I will work on it more later this week if I get time.

I stumbled across a web site called "Ethnicity of Celebs", which lists Terry's family back further than we've been able to go so far, but I don't have time to source and confirm those names right now.

Okay, this is promising:

http://carpentercousins.com/wc-584-desc/aqwg287.htm#54496

traces from Terry's great grandmother to existing profiles on WikiTree. Everything needs to be sourced and confirmed, four profiles need to be created, and Terry's father (Fox-7360) needs to be linked to his father (Fox-3016), but if this tree is accurate, then we're within sight of linking Terry to the main tree.

I found the marriage record for William Rodney Fox on vitalstats and added the information and source to the profile.

Thank you Lynn. I love the way sometimes these collaborative profiles come out of the woodwork again.
