Who were the parents of Elizabeth Leighton Small?

Question

There apparently is disagreement about who the parents [[Leighton-59|Elizabeth Leighton Small]] were. Here is a link to a post on RootsWeb back in 2004 (it is a fairly long post) that argues that Thomas and Joanna Leighton could not have been her parents.

Can anyone point to source data that sheds light on Elizabeth's parents?

Excellent question, and info posted to the rootsweb page. I'll be interested to see if anyone has any true parentage.

In searching Ancestry and the Internet more broadly, all I find is sources from Family Data Collection, and US and International Marriage Records. Hardly stellar sources.

Thanks for the link.  I have seen the book Descendants of Edward Small by Lora Underhill mentioned in the blog.  Unfortunately, the book only says that "... about 1650 or 1651 Francis Small married Elizabeth ________; mentioned by some unknown authority as Elizabeth Leighton, who was born, according to his deposition, about 1634." (Underhill, p. 26)  So, not a very solid source and even if the source was correct, there is no indication of which Elizabeth Leighton it might have been.

The "unknown authority" was Charles Wesley Tuttle of the Massachusetts Historical Society, based on the 1934 edition of the book, f.w.i.w.

I, too, have been trying to figure out Elizabeth Leighton. Additionally, when searching, I came across some rather compelling research that indicated her maiden name probably was not Leighton at all. Please read and see what you think!

Thanks for your interest. Yes, I have seen that post.  It is the reason I asked the question (I linked to it in my original question).  It made my head hurt when I read through it. :-)  Unfortunately, while it does strongly indicate who are not her parents, it does not help with who is.  So, I am still looking.

If the elizabeth that you are looking for is married to Francis small then yes her parents are Thomas leighton (1604-1672) and Joanna Hannah silsby (1604-1704) Elizabeth is listed on find a grave site and her memorial Id is 160728486 and that has her parents on it
