Does anyone need help with the state of Georgia genealogy

The state of Georgia (United States) has two excellent research libraries in Rome to the north of Atlanta and Macon to the south.  In my travels I go to these towns and would be happy to help use these sources for all (when I get there)  Actually, since I'm retired, if the question is pressing (or interesting), I might go just to do the research.  Love libraries

Hey Mr. Brogan

I'm Penny Wilson and very new to this. I was curious about your offer related to helping in Georgia area. Both sides of my family seemed to have colonized there before moving on and many still reside there. Valdosta and Columbus I know without doubt. I'm having trouble with finding anything in relation my grand father William Cole. Also my mom's mother possibly Gertrude Bolkel?? McLeod. Do you have any suggestions or advise I could beg you for. Anything would be appreciated so much. Hope not to bother and have a great day.

Thanks so much Penny Cole Wilson

I guess my first question is are they already in WikiTree.  They may be search by name at the top of your Navigation page. But that is far to easy.

USGenWeb could be another source.

Google Georgia genealogy and see if that helps.

I'll be in Rome next week for two days.  If you can e-mail anything you might have on the two relatives (birth, death etc)  I'll do my best for you.
I'm in Valdosta, GA. Even have McLeod in my line by marriage. Always going to our library to do look ups.

Hi Kern,

Thank you for your generous offer. I am Frank Jones and am very much a novice at genealogy. Two of my uncles did some work on our family genealogy about 30 years ago. I have tried to document the research I have been given, but seem to have run into a brick wall. Part of the wall is because I am a Jones and part is because I do not know where or how to look. Most of my branch have resided in Dublin, Laurens County, Georgia. I have copied below the information I am presently trying to document. I can document the marriages, the children and residency in Laurens County but am struggling to find documentation of a move from Duplin County, North Carolina via Florida. One document states "See Will Book 2, page 32." I am not sure what Will Book is referenced. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Again and Best Regards,

Frank Jones

PS Our branch runs through John Brown Jones.

JOHN William (JACK) JONES         1816‑189_?

John (Jack) Jones was born in 1816 in Duplin County, North Carolina.  His parents were John and Ann Jones who moved to Florida and were living there in 1820; but, didn't like the climate and the hostile Indians so they moved to Laurens County, Georgia where they bought land in 1826.  John (Jack) Jones was married twice.  His first wife was Nancy Rowland; and his second wife was Emmaline C. Keen.  He lived in Laurens County, about four miles east of Dublin the majority of his life.  It is known that he owned at least one slave.  He died sometime about 1895‑98, and was buried in the Daniell Cemetery east of Dublin.

Hey my fathers family is historically very much tied to Georgia. My Harper line is extensively known as is the Bankston side. I also have some Jones and Smith but of my Lewis and Moran lines very very little is known. I remember finding a land grant to a Charles Moran in the macon library but did not get any more information.
Of special interest would be Robert Lewis and his wife Bythie Moran. Assumed born mid 1800s possibly both in Griffin Ga. Thanks!

In addition to the mentioned libraries, the Georgia Archives has a "Virtual Vault" that has records on line free of charge, in particular Georgia Marriage Records.  The following is the link to the marriage records - you go down to county and pull down the county list and hit enter.  It will bring up the marriage records for that county.  These are microfilm records of the acutal marriage books: http://cdm.georgiaarchives.org:2011/cdm/landingpage/collection/countyfilm

Thanks, Kern, for your offer of help.

I'm looking for two Bowers brothers -- William and Giles, or possibly James Giles -- prior to 1837. Giles and Willliam were b ca 1806 and 1810, respectively, in NC. They came to Georgia ca. 1830, perhaps from Barnwell Co., SC.

James married a Thompson -- Judy, d/o John Thompson -- in 1830 in Lincoln Co., GA, and died about six years later. Judy remarried her sister's widower, Thomas Brack, and had four Bowers children -- Sarah (b 1829 GA, m Elliott), John (b 1833 GA, m Garrett), Lourania (b 1834 GA, m Patridge or Partridge), and Lewis Thomas Bowers (b 1836 GA, m Bennett).

I've never found a document for Giles, but the last of his six children, Martha, was born early 1837 in Georgia.

Family legend says William died in a horse-racing accident, but some of my cousins suspect he and Giles were hanged for horse theft. That seems possible as both disappeared about the same time in 1837. One of my cousins says he once saw a record that the brothers were involved in horse thefts from Aiken Co., SC.

My Giles married a woman named Rebecca lnu, b ca 1809 SC. She showed up in Marion Co., GA, ca 1840 with Giles's six children -- Mary Ann (b 1828 Barnwell Co., SC, and m Josey), John (1830 SC, married Sasser), James Alexander (b 1831 GA, m Sasser), George W. (b 1834 GA, m Deavours), Sarah Jane (b 1837 GA, m Tullis) and Martha (b 1838 GA). Rebecca later married a ufn Marlow and a Robert Bell.

I'm also interested in learning Rebecca's maiden name. Family says it was Giles, but I supect it was Gill or something else.

Again, thanks.

Mr. Brogan,  Your offer is very kind.  Thank you for helping us "searchers"... even if you are not able to find the information.  I have been researching for about ten years and have made a lot of discoveries... but there will always be more questions.  I was born in Troup Co. GA... but my family lived across the river in Chambers Co. AL.  I knew almost nothing about the family because we moved to Michigan as a child.

I found that my 3r great grandfather was an early settler in Milledgeville, Baldwin Co. and had never heard of it.  I am happy to say I spent some time there a few years ago and loved it.  I have also spent a very short time at the Georgia Archives in Morrow.  I am not currently able to get back due to illness in my family so if you can help it would be wonderful.  I have pretty much exhausted the Georgia Virtual Vault site and Georgia Historic Newspapers sites.  While at the archives I found that not all of the papers are on the site and found a death announcement that gave a date for the death of Jean Bivins in a bound book that gave details of articles.

Anyway, If you have a chance have a look at these profiles and see what I don't know about the people there.

Langsdale-31...Elizabeth Langsdale (or Landsdale) Cushing death date and parents

Cushing-1086... John (or Joseph) R. Cushing... need documentation on whether he is actually a son of Isaac and Elizabeth Cushing

Bivins-78... Jean (or Jane) A. Bivins... need documentation of her parents

Really anything new that you find in the way of documentation would be appreciated.
