She is the real mother of my maternal grandmother. The first (though apparently undocumented) wife of Alvin Altman. My grandmother was, I believe, the oldest of all her siblings, she was born in 1932. Alvin is listed twice in the 1930 census... once as a "roomer"(amoung borders) and once as the head of house. In both of them he is listed as married; no wife listed. There are a few Elizabeth Wolfe's in the area, but I can't make sense of it.
In 1937 Alvin remarried. I can't find a divorce or death record anywhere, and currently can't afford to pay for a marriage record. I don't think she died, my grandma didn't like to talk about her and I vaguely remember finding a card from her in my grandma's things after she died. I don't have access to it anymore.
Supposedly Elizabeth's parents came from Russia and my grandma had those papers. Those are gone, too. There is more than one match in the Stark County, ND area census 1915-30. At least two of them have parents from Russia. So I'm confused!
Is there any way to get around paying for records here? I do not live near ND, so manually hunting, for now, is a no go.
Also, I have no concrete reason to believe her name was Mary. Its just a hunch. My grandmother was supposed to be named for her, so it should be Elizabeth. Alvin's mother was also named Elizabeth, which could argue both ways in my grandmother's name.
