Help needed to find referenced Family Search record

I'm trying to source a couple of profiles that I adopted & the only source given for all the profiles around them is

  • S0214429: Family Search listing for Susanna Everard Walker, The Church of Latterday Saints (Search as of Jan 11, 2001)

This is also the source given for George Walker, who I think is probably my 7x-gr-grandfather (but I'm looking for sources for a few generations still). Susanna is George's daughter, and her profile has a little bit more:

  • Source S0214417 Title: IGI Record for Susanna Everard Walker Author: LDS Family Search Publication: Film # 170644, Page 77, ref # 2904 Media: Electronic

But I cannot find this record in FamilySearch (probably me, not a missing record - I am hardly ever successful in finding things there). I'd like to get more info to help with my tree, and also to see if the record can help with the profiles I adopted (see, for example, Joan Cromwell).

Thanks!

and... then I read Cynthia B's question/RJ's answer. Clicking Catalog & then Film/Fiche Number, entering 170644 returns:

Baptisms for the dead, 1927-1943; heir indexes, 1927-1959
Author: Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Arizona Temple

Since Susanna was born 1744, and Joan Cromwell in the late 1500s, I don't think 1927-1943 "Baptisms for the dead" is a reliable source for any information concerning them. Right?

Liz, those "baptisms of the dead" are probably LDS records of ancestors of an LDS member upon the post-death baptism (conversion to Mormonism) of the ancestor. As such, this type of source is user-contributed, unsourced itself, highly derivative and a better source should be sought.

wow! I cannot tell you how long I spent trying to find that!! Thanks so much!
IGI is an index of a variety of things, including both user-contributed, unsourced family data and extractions from original/microfilmed records. Be sure to look carefully at the individual entries to see where the information came from.
I second Jillaine on this.

There's a related question below that you might want to explore:

How do you translate the Family Search urls or film numbers, to tell what is the source?

Hi Susanna,

You can actually write down all the film numbers. On the FamilySearch  website you can use the locator and find the local Mormon Church. They have a Family History Center. This is open to the public. You can order microfilm to be sent from Utah to look at the records you are  interested in.

Also, Baptism & Baptism for the dead are completely different.

Mormon Baptisms are usually down when Mormon children turn 8 yrs old. Adults who covert can also be baptised. Baptism for the dead is post mortem baptism for people who were not baptised.  You can also ask these questions to the volunteer at the Family History center.

Hope this helps,

Jennifer
Thanks Jennifer! I'm really lucky to have a Family History Center just down the road from me. I might have to stop by to see if they can help me find an actual record for her instead of submitted trees.

Cheers, Liz
