August Bernard Carter Berg was born in Boston on 23 May 1876 to Helena Berg.  She was an unmarried Swedish servant living in South Boston. The adoption was initiated on 7 April 1877, and the papers say that she was a single woman and unable to provide for the said child. Anna M. W. Hoyt was the witness to Helena Berg's signature consenting to the adoption. The father is listed as John Carter formerly of Lawrence.  The adoption was finalized on 24 April 1877 to Daniel Francis Viles and given the name Edgar Francis Viles.  The papers say that the child is illegitimate, that the mother has assented to the adoption.  The record has no address for Helena.

I can find an emigration record for one Helena Wilhelmina Berg, b. 1851 at Ledsjö, Skaraborg (Västra Götaland, the daughter of August Berg and Stina Maria Gunnarsdotter. She arrived in Boston on 27 Oct 1871. I can find a marriage record in Boston on 27 Sept 1877 for a Helena Berg and Charles Lochmann, an engraver b. in Prussia.  The record shows that her parents were August and Maria, so I am pretty sure that the immigrant Helena W. Berg and the Helena who married Lochmann are the same. After marriage, Helena and Charles Lochmann disappeared.

Where did Helena and Charles Lochmann go?

Is there any evidence that the immigrant Helena Wilhelmina/Vilhelmina Berg and the mother of August Berg are the same people?

I have found further information about the Helena Wilhelmina Berg who emigrated on 27 Oct 1871. As I stated, I believe this Helena was the daughter of August Berg and Stina Maria Gunnarsdotter. When I follow these parents back in the Swedish Church Census, I find that they had at least 8 children and Helena was the 3rd of these 8. Two of the younger children died before Helena came to the United States: sister Augusta Maria and brother Ernest Bernhard.

Helena name her illegitimate son August Bernard Carter Berg.  August was not only the name of Helena's father but also the masculine version of her dead sister's name. Bernhard was the middle name of her deceased brother. I believe this allows me to reliably conclude that the Helena who emigrated in 1871 is the same Helena as the daughter of these parents.

I still can't find anything about Helena after the adoption except for an Helena marrying Charles Lochmann/Lockman/Lachmann . Any help would be appreciated.
