Hi Rodney,  I have seen notes about 'dressing up' in Oregon, when Cornelius Gilliam led the Oregon troops in response to the Whitman Massacre at Whitman Mission.  I have not seen any items about the event you described in the question.  The items I've read in Salt Lake City indicate that the Mormon's in Missouri asked for Cornelius Gilliam, as they knew he had a reputation for fairness.  The Mormon's had attacked neighbors and relatives of Cornelius Gilliam if I recall the story relayed that I read in the past regarding Missouri.
