Is there an existing WikiTree category or project for "Melungeon"?

My family surname is associated to a known region and time frame to possibly have ancestors who may be identified as "Melungeon"; a term defined as: Melungeon identity is assumed to involve a mixture of some combination of Western European, Native American, and sometimes African ancestry, with early assertions of "Portuguese" or "Portuguese Indian" background. Is there an existing WikiTree Category or project for "Melungeon"? If not how do I create a new category?

Yes, there is a Melungeon Roots page on Wikitree.  My friend Billy Matney and I have started the Melungeon Roots page in an effort to find out more ourselves.  You are more than welcome to join us.

Not yet, but you are not the first to ask. See http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/242284/have-ancestor-once-thought-melungeon-there-melungeon-project to see who else is interested.

And see http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/242840/can-you-help-on-the-melungeon-free-page for information about the information page that's being developed.

Thank you Ellen for the links. The Melungeon's occupied a brief and obscure page in our history.  This group of people is written about and referenced in the book and title, "The Last Lost Tribe of America" by author Elizabeth Caldwell Hirschman. Hirschman, supported by DNA testing, genealogies; and a variety of historical documents, suggests that the Melungeons included such notable early Americans as Daniel Boone, John Sevier, Abraham Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, and Andrew Jackson. Once lost, but now forgotten no more.Seems to me this is a perfect example for a WikiTree project. I wish I has the experience to start this.
Information on the Melungeon's genetic origins is at:

Hi Ellen!  Actually, we do have a Melungeon Roots page that was started recently by my friend Billy Matney and I.

Please feel free to check it out and refer anyone who is interested in participating or just finding out more.  :)

Hi Peter!  Would you mind if I used your link in our Melungeon Roots page?  This is some great info.
Hello Amy, Please use that link.
Thank you, Peter!  :)
Melungeon DNA is a hot topic. Glad it's added.
