Profile Improvement Project (PIP) : What we do and how to join. [closed]

Profile Improvement should be part of every wikitreers routine. From the moment you create your first profile every addition/correction is a profile improvement.

It's a learned process.

The first thing you might learn is how to "clean" up your gedcom import.

Then where to find sources and how to format them (give them enough information that they can be found again even if the links break).

As you begin writing bios, you'll want to learn how to create inline citations.

At some point you'll learn how to merge profiles and how to integrate the two biographies afterwards.

I enjoy solving the puzzles and untangling the knots

If you find that you really enjoy doing any of these, or you discover that you're just automatically improving profiles as you randomly fix the large and small problems on Wikitree profiles, consider joining the Profile Improvement Project. Read the Project Page. Follow the other steps in the "How to Join" section. Then post an answer here requesting the badge. Tell me what you're concentrating on for the moment. Need help with inline citations? I can help.

Thank you.

Hi Anne I see a couple of things listed I can help with I think. I'll add profiles and follow along and jump in when I see something I can help with if you don't mind.   :)
Thanks Gigi, I've given you the Profiles badge. Thank you and if you have questions, please ask.
Thanks Anne B!!
I put this answer under "comment" instead of "answer".

Sorry.

Will try again - - do it the right way - - as I "join" this PIP.

ha ha ha... what a time to make a mistake!

Cheryl
I've given up counting the goofs, I've made. :)
I would like to request the badge. I am currently working on completing pending merges and this involves cleaning up the Biography and Source.

I now also want to improving the quality of my own and the merged profiles.
What a pleasant thing to do first thing in the morning. Thank you Barry.

I'd love to help with this project and i'd like the badge. Here are some examples of my work.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shinn-871

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Marsh-5711

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shinn-893

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Shinn-40

I believe wikitree could be a legacy for people and we can showcase their lives rather than just listing the facts.

Nice work Teresa. Do you know how to create inline citations? See the section "Embed them as references" Here's a really simple example and a slightly more complicated example. If you have any trouble figuring this out I'll be glad to help.

I might as well go for this badge too. I have the Corrections officer badge already.  I am constantly improving profiles - my own and those I come across when sourcing and correcting errors.

Oops! Silly me. I already have it!

Thanks Carolyn. Since I'm only reading the post now, you gave me a good chuckle.

I would like to request the badge please.   I am beginning with the cleaning up of my ged.com import.  I am also writing up better bios beginning with my direct line.  Adding photos and inline source citations.  As I move further back I'm finding many ancestors already on Wiki Tree that need some help - so I'm helping those too.

Hello and Welcome to PIP

I am working on BIO Building on my profiles. I put the cat on my profile already for Profile Improvement Project. Do I need tom add anything else.

That J challenge is interesting since my ancestors on the German side all had Johan or John for 1st name with some variations to these.

My name is Jon; my son's names is Jon; his sons are Jeremiah and Joshua; Jeremiah's son is Jordan.

I would appreciate it if you would award me the badge.

Welcome to the PIP. You now have the badge.

You could add you're name to the section labeled Progress Reports and what you're concentrating on at the moment, although I know that changes from day to day sometimes, so in general is fine.

This month's challenge is for surnames that end in A. You undoubtedly have some of those as ancestors also.

What do you have to do for the PIP or is it PAP contest? Explain please.

Czarowitz-1

Talking about the Bio Builder's Challenge? Strictly speaking it's not part of the PIP (Profile Improvement Project), but writing biographies is profile improvement, so they go hand in hand. The G2G post has good instructions on what to do to be part of the Challenge.  Read the instructions and then if you still have questions, you can ask a question by making a comment to the post.

Hi Campbell You have the badge now. Remember to add your name to the progress reports list at the bottom of the Profile Improvement page. You can update it as your interests and concentrations change.

And of course if you have questions don't hesitate to ask.

Sign me up, mostly working on improving my own profiles right now. Trying to limit my unknows and make sure there is at least one correct place associated with every profile (which helps finding the right person if/when merging) and at least one source for each of my profiles.

Will be working on my own watchlist for a while longer but will also help with  adding category Swedish unsourced profiles if that would be ok?

Thank you for joining Maggie. What you're doing sounds great. Definitely add {{Unsourced|Sweden}} when it's appropriate.

Hi Anne, I would like to join the Profile Improvement Project. I am currently working on adding complete profiles with bios and sources for my family tree as well as adding sources to unsourced profiles I come across, and adding "unsourced" to appropriate profiles.
by J Kline G2G6 Mach 4 (40.3k points)
Hi J, Thank you for joining. Keep up the good work.

Hi, Anne, add me to the PIP also. My personal Parish tree has had little representation on WT, so as I'm adding to it, I'm finding peripheral (well, to me, anyway) profiles that are unsourced - and also finding fairly easily at least some sources, so improvement is something that can't be avoided. Unfortunately, it also leads me astray from "my" direct tree, but what the heck, one for all and all for one, right?

Thanks Jim. It's a common phenomenon on Wikitree, straying from what you think you're doing.

I would ilke to request a badge for profile improvement project please

Cleaning GEDCOM on all the South African profiles under the South African Roosts Project. Adding sources as I find them, working hard to improve SA profiles to be proud of.

Add me too please.

I have been working on the "database errors report" the last couple of months. I find that I do help clean up profiles from merges. So many people forget to clean up all the duplicate info after a merge!! Also I have been adding basic bio's to what the error report calls "empty profiles" especially if the profile has no manager at the moment.

Hope that qualifies me!! Thanks!

by Sandra Davidson G2G6 Pilot (189k points)
Definitely qualifies you. Thanks for helping and joining

Hi Annie, I have been working on many of the pre-1700 Bentley profiles, as part of the Bentley Name Study I started. I'm adding sources, cleaning up profiles that are just GEDCOM dumps, etc.  I thought it might be helpful to coordinate my efforts with the Profile Project.  I am also going to start learning more about the database errors and fix those.  I'd like to be awarded the badge and let others know what I'm working on.  Since the work I'm doing affect profile that are covered by various projects, I wanted to let others know what I'm doing.  I always welcome a second pair of eyes checking over what I've done.  Thanks.
by John Bentley G2G6 Mach 2 (24.5k points)
Thanks John, for improving all those Bentley profiles.

May I join the project? I find myself doing it all anyway -- tidying Gedcoms, adding sources, improving the narrative and layout - as I go deep into my error list, focusing on orphaned profiles and profiles with a 2 year plus inactive manager. Thanks ~ Ellen

Thank you Ellen, Keep on improvin....

Hi, have thought about joining before but with the SOURCERER and the Ranger work plus I am working on the Civil War, 27th Missouri. but with the Sourcerer  work I am doing Profiles anyway...  And am surprised at how many profiles only have the "source"  part of the censuses, birth  etc.... and when I go onto a profile I have to go to the familysearch.org  to put the life together myself... Anyway,  please take a look at one I am helping with.  Zeyen-51  I think it has the wrong parents, and the sibling is not.. and that Nora is a dup to a different dad...???  Sorry for rambling..Thank you Carole

ps:  I would love to have the badge...:)

You now have the badge. Thank you for joining.

William H. Zeyen-51 has his brother Louis Zeyen-39 attached as his father. His father should be Nicholas Zeyen-35 and his mother should be Marg. Musschancey-1. I can't see who's attached as mother now, because she's private. Disconnect the current parents. Attach the correct parents. That will clean up your error code.
Thank you.

Yes, I agree but since the manager is active and responded to me I thought i might tell her first  before I unlinked the parents and placed the Nicolas/Maug..  Guess I will go ahead and do that now.. Thanks again Carole

I would love to join, Anne, since I am already doing most of the activities on the project list.  I am also continuing to clean up the gedcoms from my watch list one profile at a time.  Thanks!
