This question is more out of curiosity than anything else. I have the "Application for Headstone or Marker" for my grandfather, Ira Thomas Farthing. And something just jumped out at me, a couple things did actually but.....

Anyway the first thing I noticed was Enlistment Date 10-21-1918. That is correct for the times. Discharge Date is 12-6-1918. Being in the Army for 10 weeks seems very strange. On the application in the same box as the discharge date is a hand-written notation of "Hon" which I assume is written by someone meaning Honorable Discharge.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Here is a tough question that I sure will be a 'No' but would it be possible to find his DD-214 somewhere?

That is enough of bugging everyone today.

Thanks for any advice in advance!

WWI technically ended on Nov 11, 1918, so it's possible that they discharged him when he finished his initial training.

At the Clerk's Office in Sumter County, Florida, from where my great-uncle was drafted, I found a book titled "WWI Record of Soldiers Discharged" with a page for each veteran. You can see my uncle's sheet at that link.

Maybe something like that exists where your grandfather called home?

Thank you for the reply, I didn't even think about that.....

I will definitely check on the book.

Just wanted to clarify, that's not a book that would be sold. It's an Official Records type book, much like Marriage Records or Deed books.

Glad to help. Good luck finding more info
