When a merge is done, no information is lost from either profile. The merged profile will include data from both and will need to be edited to merge the data.

Merges are encouraged if the two profiles are in fact duplicates in order to maintain only one profile per person on WikiTree.

Donnie, at the end of the merge it asks the Merging person to Edit the Biography. = both Biography s are then combined into the new profile Biography. Nothing is lost & can easily be seen in the Changes Tab.

The two profiles for Robert Cobb (Cobbs-190 and Cobb-5048) have parents that also need to be merged first: father (Cobbs-20 and Cobb-5049) and mother (White-3147 and White-29763). When there a duplicate families on WikiTree it's really important to go as far back up the family line as there are duplicates, and to merge the oldest ones first. Then you move down the line merging the duplicates as you go. For each merge, the data (date & location of birth/marriage/death) will have to be agreed on. And in this case, there are two different spellings of the surname, one with and the other without the 's' at the end, so a decision has to be made about which surname to choose. All of the information in the 'text' box, the biography', for each of the profiles will appear on the combined profile. None of that is lost. Then after the merge, it's necessary to go back and remove any duplication of information in the biography.

Great answer!  My 2 cents would be to add any variant spellings of the surname to the OLN field.

Hi Donnie,  I just set all the duplicates to be merged.  I think I got them all.  The problem was that you were creating profiles with the name Cobb while profiles with the name Cobbs already existed on the WikiTree.  It looks like Wikipedia and other sources are using the Cobbs spelling, so I set the merges of the Cobb profiles into the Cobbs profiles.  Hope this helps, but you will need to approve the merges to continue forward.  Kitty
