How should we set up Categories for Athletes?

I would like to categorize Ralph Waldo Rose,  an American track and field athlete.   Competed in the Olympics and set a numer or records.  I don't know enough about sports to design a reasonable structure.

Thanks ,Phil

How coincidental . There are people that ask about sports stars genealogy sometimes to see if they are related . All I know is that there is a category for sports already set ~ with just baseball ( naturally the Yankees ) in that section.

User Michael Lechner has done a lot of thinking and organizing in the Category space and would probably be the best to suggest an appropriate hierarchy under sports.  In absence of that, perhaps the next level down is key sport types-- golf, track & field, football, etc.   maybe that's sufficient? Michael, what do you think ?

Oh heck.  Should have looked at the category first.  It's already broken down.  I'd just add one for track and field and add that category to the relevant profile.
Ooh. And oh might want a category for Olympic athletes.
He is similar to my ancestor who was a professional baseball player who was inducted into the baseball Hall-of-Fame. The top level category is sports.  Baseball is one of the sub-categories under sports.  Then, within baseball, you have a wide range of sub-categories that are specific to baseball (specific teams, the Hall-of-Fame, etc.).  In our current form, my ancestor appears in two sub-categories under baseball (St. Louis Browns and Baseball Hall of Fame).

For Ralph Waldo Rose, the top level catgeory would be sports.  Track and Field should be one of the sub-categories under sports.  Then, within track-and-field, you would have a range of subcategories that would be relevant to track and field, such as specific events, Olympics, world record holder, etc. - as there are numerous people out there who could be classified under these categories. Ralph Waldo Rose should be in sub-categories under track and field (Shot Put, World Record Holders, Olympians, Olympic Gold Medalists).

Add the following lines to the top of his profile bio section:

In the bio section you may link to these pages using the following:

Discus throw
Hammer throw
Shot put
Two handed shot put

Olympic Games (1904)
Olympic Games (1908)
Olympic Games (1912)

You may edit the categories, add stories and other subcategories using these as examples.  Have fun, Mike

Michael,

Kind of thing I was looking for.

I have reviewed your detail work on the Olympic category.  Perfect.

Thank you.

I noticed that if you do a search for Olympics in the Google search on Wikitree you will find all of the profiles where someone has included Olympics.  Not very efficient, but an interesting project if someone wanted.
