Team Virginia is focused on clearing Virginia Unsourced Profiles during the Oct. 1-3 Source-a-Thon, and on Victory! See more at Team Virginia.

Ready? If you haven't yet, check out the information on the Team Virginia page - it's got tons.

Set? In preparation of listing profiles you change from being unsourced to sourced - see [this tutorial] - comment on your answer below & add some numbers to get you started. If you run out of room in your initial post, you can reply to the comment and continue the list - again, see [this tutorial] & also [these instructions] for a numbered list.

Go! The bell rings at midnight (Eastern Time) so start sourcing at the crack of October 1!

Star just posted in G2G about how to join the Source-a-Thon, but it contains good advice for preparing for the Source-a-Thon too! Take a look at http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/298576/need-help-signing-up-for-next-weekend-s-source-a-thon-

OK so how many profiles have we really corrected?

Is it 562 or 205?

Is a Census Record for John Smith really proof?

Liz you are correct.

Hi Larry! as of 8 pm (ET) yesterday, we had sourced 562 profiles & the cumulative number of Virginia Unsourced Profiles had gone down by 205. Two reasons the numbers don't match: (1) Not all of the 562 unsourced profiles were categorized as Virginia Unsourced Profiles; (2) New Virginia Unsourced Profiles continue to be added.

And you're right. Adding a source for someone with the same name as the name on the profile, even with unique names such as Whata WeirdName, without checking that the source is for that Whata is not helpful. If census with John Smith is 1850 (I think it is) or later, then it will also have his family members. If the profile bio has the same family members (or profiles for them are attached), and for the same location as John, then it's probably for that John & I would say yes, it's proof (most lineage organizations consider census records acceptable proof).

Thanks Chris ... have you seen the table Eric did for us?

Saturday Team Captain for V Team Virginia

by Liz Shifflett G2G6 Pilot (631k points)
edited by Liz Shifflett
  1. Frances (Gaskins) Ingram. (children/death date, transcript of husband's will)
  2. William Randolph. (source for relationship to parent/transcript of suit filed Chesterfield co.)
  3. Elizabeth (Parrish) Foster. (christening of son shows parents / FamilySearch VA records)
  4. Philadelphia (Claiborne) Carter. (added marriage source/newspaper announcement)
  5. John Chandler. (added source)
  6. Albiano Lupo. (added source - in Elizabeth City, VA 1624; deleted birth year (1626 was his death year) )
  7. Temperance Lupo. (added sources/parents & birth year)
  8. Elizabeth (Bassano) Lupo. (added source (Lt Albino & Elizabeth Lupo of Elizabeth City, 1624))
  9. William Byrd. (added source)
  10. Mark Kenton. part a: (added research note/DAR-grs - b/d dates & b location match, but need more) part b: (found another source. it's him (and other source names wife))
  11. Armistead Churchill. (added link to Find a Grave memorial with source citations)

Profiles that I reviewed & removed the Unsourced category from, but don't count, since they had a source already (not fully sourced, but not unsourced either)

  • Ann (Thornton) Peyton. (removed unsourced category (profile has a source); changed marriage from 1750 to before 1746)
  • Francis Furgason. (removed unsourced category (profile has a source))

No sources found/added lead or research note (profile still in unsourced category)

  • John Plant. (searched DAR-grs, Find a Grave, FamilySearch with no results; added Research Notes)
  • Mary (UNKNOWN) Iaac. (added Research Notes: FamilySearch, Find a Grave)
  • Joseph Bell. (added research notes section)
  • William Duff. (added a (maybe) lead)
  • Lucy (Peterson) Thweatt. (profile was in unsourced category because it needs a marriage source but parents/sister are noted in referenced article, so unsourced cats were removed )
Thank you for all the work you are doing to help us.

Hi Doug! I took the liberty of combining your posts & formatting your list of sourced profiles as a numbered list. Thanks for being the first to post a sourced profile (2!), although Eric's out in the lead now with 7 sourced. I'm still at the gate doing my checklists LOL!
hi doug! please number your sourced profiles. I'm having enough trouble trying to tally our count on just a couple hours sleep without having to actually count them too!
I did not change anything, your coding is gone.
weird. I'll add it back. I just select the names & then click the 1-2- icon in the formatting windo above. Thanks!
ps - I left the numbers you added manually in case the coding disappears again. Cheers, Liz

Count me in for the Western part of VirginIa and the parts that broke off into West Virginia (before they became Wild and Wonderful).

by Sandy Patak G2G6 Pilot (229k points)
Yay! I was wondering where the Hangout folks got 837 for Team Virginia's total, but I'm seeing it now going through everyone's posts. I even managed to source 4 more!
Thank you so much .  WV is my childhood home and the place where my roots run  Samples .  I have been spending time cleaning up and researching too.  Might as well while we are there on the page.  Makes for small numbers but better profiles

Thank you again
I just spent three hours on a profile I had off the Unsourced list in 10 minutes (it was a bit of a mess, and a duplicate, and the duplicate had unsourced info in conflict with the sourced info, but ... <sigh> and that's the way I lose time in WikiTree!)

Liz - I am so glad you mentioned this because I got so lost on a different track this morning that bread crumbs would not even have helped get back home!  Now, I have convinced myself to adopt some after the work I've put into some abandoned profiles.

Add these to the my running list...

21.  Ferguson-3904: Added Marriage Source
22.  Ferguson-3900: Added Marriage Source
23.  Ferguson-3901: Added VA Birth & Christenings
24.  Ferguson-3903: Added Marriage Source and 1850 Census
25.  Hemmings-123: Added Marriage Source & Bio
26.  Hemmings-114: Added Bio from Monticello
27.  Hatcher-375: Added 1850 Census
29.  Hatcher-373: Added 1850 Census; 1880 Census, Sources for Children
30.  Hatcher-374: Added Marriage Source, Death Source
31.  Hatcher-377:  Added Civil War Source, F.A.G., Marriage
32.  Hatcher-384: Added Marriage Source
33.  Hatfield-644:  Added Marriage Source, Added F.A.G. Source, Added Soldier's Tombstone Ref
34.  Hatfield-646:  Added 1820 Census; F.A.G.

Woo-hoo! Thanks Sandy! We're creeping up to 1000 :D

I took the liberty of adding some of the ones you did on the golf course. They were good sources for abandoned or ignored (6 years with no change!) profiles...

Hi  Wow Thank  glad you are with us

Seems paltry, but I've struck out a lot.... 3 more

  1. William Branham added findagrave memorial with grave marker
  2. Matthew Kinchen added Probate and will records
  3. Sarah Kinchen added marriage record, sent profile manager a note to proof and enter spouse.
It's all good! And you're doing way better than I am... took me forever to get to 10 profiles sourced. I'm hoping to do 6 more by midnight - (make it to my bib #16 :D)

Thanks  Carol
So Liz what is the count now?  Some of these were like going down a rat hole!

Larry Cunningham

Hi! I've been proven unreliable in my abilities in that regard <grin> so I'm hoping Eric or Doug will post the update to http://www.wikitree.com/g2g/301761?show=305670#c305670up

But I wanted to have something for the midnight hangout... my count as of 11:35 (when I FINALLY found an unsourced profile that I had a source for and increased my number to 11), um. er. Oh yes. I got 1186.

And I think I've been lost in a rabbit warren the whole weekend. I think the next source-a-thon I'll adopt the handle Watership Downs!

hi guys. my body said I'm done a few hours ago. I just got up to check the hangouts but going back to bed now. And i have serious math challenges apparently! I thought I had accurately updated the table on Team Virginia's page even though I couldn't manage to total those numbers with any degree of certainty (I came up with 1022 twice though, so that's what I posted to the G2G update thread). THANK YOU Eric for posting the later update. i hope to be functioning again by 10, but I'll leave the updates to those with better skills than I have & focus my last bit of Source-a-Thon time on trying to source at least 6 more profiles!

I just want to say how much fun it's been getting to know y'all through Team Virginia and how proud I am of each of you & how much we've done and how much fun we had doing it! And I'm thinking Eric might have taught me enough that I could feel useful participating in the October Sourcerers Challenge - I posted a comment about that on our [Quick Reference] page, and then in the next Hangout Mags (or Eowyn or Julie) said to follow the [Sourcerers G2G tag] to be notified when the October Challenge starts. I hadn't thought of that!

So hope to see you after the Source-a-Thon in the October Sourcerers Challenge. Till then - see you in an hour or so. And THANK YOU again for making the 2016 Source-a-Thon such a blast!

Cheers,
Liz

My last entries -- hopefully in the right thread:

  1. John Kidwell – added son’s death record (technically he should have been w.va)
  2. Evan Kidwell – wasn’t unscourced but had no sources – added 1860 census record
  3. William Payton, added tax list and land survey
  4. James Rosser, Sr. Added will and marriage record
  5. John Royal, added marriage record
  6. Jonathon Peter Williamson – added probate record
  7. Richard Williamson – added marriage record

Gideon Moon – added Lunenburg Co. Deed, but though the profile was classified as unsourced, it had sources. Formatted so that the sources will show up.  Probably shouldn’t count?

William Witt:  Found Family Data Collection individual record, but only entered it as a research note.  There is a message from Stratton-11 that states that there is no evidence that the parents had a son named William.

That is Wonderful!! Thanks so much for all your work during the Source-a-Thon :D

I LOVED working with Team Virginia. Thanks for inviting me.  You guys absolutely rock.  It's so cool to have dedicated genealogists looking after our early settlers!
