Would you like to join the South African Source-a-Thon Team?

This is where the coordination happens - Post an answer to say you're in (not a comment). Include your race number if you have it already.

You can be working on unsourced profiles from 20th century South Africa, and the mainly nineteenth century ZAR, Cape Colony, Natal, OVS (though there are also some 18th century {{Unsourced}} profiles that should have the {{Dutch_Cape_Colony}} template on, floating out there) - you choose!

We will have our own thread to post in and encourage each other on.

UPDATE (1 Oct 2016 7:15 European Mean Time): The bin with {{Unsourced|South Africa}} can be found here ... (but there are loads more profiles that are South African and also has the generic {{Unsourced}} template on, as much as there are loads of unsourced profiles with no such template on)

This is where you will track your contributions.

Basically, this is what you do:

1.) Pick a profile from
http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Unsourced_Profiles or http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:South_Africa_Unsourced_Profiles and search for sources to back up the facts. If you find one, add it according to the http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Sources guidelines.

2.) Remove the {{Unsourced}} or [[Category:Unsourced Profiles]]
categorization or categorizations, and save the profile.

3.) Add the profile's WikiTree ID to your G2G tracking post.

Here are much more detailed instructions:
http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Source-a-Thon_Tutorial

UPDATE 2 (2) (1 Oct 2016 16:39 European Mean Time) apparently the Marathon has already started even though it is not even noon yet in the US.

HUGE APOLOGIES EVERY ONE - WE HAVE LOST SOME HOURS NOW BUT I KNOW THAT WE ARE NOT IN FOR THE PRIZES BUT QUALITY OF SOURCING, SO THAT SHOULD NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Thanks for starting a team, Philip!

Hi everyone, if you have the time we can start preparing our profiles for the source-a-thon.

Currently there are thousands {{Unsourced}} 19th century South African (1807-1899) profiles, There are also thousands more without any templates on at all.

By copy/pasting the following template {{Unsourced|South Africa}} over the existing {{Unsourced}} South African templates, there will be a better distinction between the huge heap of 200000 + profiles that need validation and the specific South African one's.

Dankie Philip ek sal  {{Unsourced|South Africa}}  bylas sover ek sien.

Dankie Ronel, dit sal ontsettend baie help.

Hi Everyone. Amsterdam and South Africa is in the same time zone. So if the thon starts in the US on 12:00 in the afternoon on Oct 1st, 2016, the thon will start here in Amsterdam and in South Africa at 18:00 in the evening.

If you are contributing from anywhere else say New Zealand, there is this method to work out how late the thon will start in you town / city / time zone: World Clock Meeting Planner.

This is how it works (quoting as how I received it in a email):

1. Put your city (or any city in your time zone) in Location 1.

2. Put any city in U.S. Eastern Daylight Time in Location 2. I use New York City.

3. Click on "Show Timetable".

This will generate a chart that compares the time in each of those places. From there, you can determine what time it will be in your city when it's midnight on the U.S. east coast.  It automatically adjusts for daylight savings where applicable.

See below the answer of Ronel.

Baie dankie Philip

Begin die Source-a-thon nie op 1 Oktober om 00:01 nie? (midnight not midday)

hi Philip

How do I post my registration number for the source-a-thon to here. I have found quite a few sources
Hi Pat, just copy / paste your number into an answer to this thread, and write two or three words .. :-)

Great Philip to see you're starting a team, and for everyone :

Om deel te neem reageer dan op Philips vraag met 'n antwoord insluitend die nommer ( Dit het jy gekry toe jy op gegee het , as jy nog nie opgegee het vir die Source-a-Thon, moet jy dit eerst even doen)

To join, just post an answer on Philips question, and include your race bib number. (You got one when you registered. If you haven't registered yet, do that first.)

Good luck and hope we all can source a whole lot of Unsourced profiles !

Of course if I come across some Cape of Good Hope Dutch ancestors, they will receive the Cape of Good Hope template and sources as well  :)

What time does the ource-a-thon start in  South Africa?

 GMT + or - ?

Thanks

by Ronel Olivier G2G6 Pilot (123k points)

Excellent question Ronel - I've noticed that our time zone (South Africa and the Netherlands in Summer have the same time zone) is always off when one looks at the time of my last contribution tonight - it says 13:57: You posted a message on the page for Aeltie (Myburg) Mijburg. But that was not the case - I edited that profile I think about one hour ago - 19.00 perhaps ... so how is this going to work ...?

Looking at http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Erlank-66, you courld replace the {{Unsourced}} with {{Unsourced|South Africa}} (for all the unsourced profiles under your creation). This way it would be easier for us to find it.

1. Rachel (Horn) Richardson - already sourced took out unsourced (Baptism Register)

2.Maria (Geyer) Brink - Dutch reformed Church Records

3.Ferdinand Geyer - Dutch Reforemed Church Membership Record

4. Matthew Aikman - Marriage register

5. Jessie (Mellis) Aikman - Marriage Register

6. Archie Aikman - Baptism Register

7. Margaret Aikman - Baptism register

8.  Maggie (Allen) Brennan - Baptism Register

9. William Baxter - Tombstone photo

10.Mary (Tunbridge) Baxter - Tombstone photo

11.Charles Colin Campbell - already sourced by Dillon Gray

12. Elisabeth (Fuchs) Fick - Baptism Record & Marriage Register

13. Tom Paice - Estate papers reference

14.Leslie McNamara - Death Notice, Death Certificate & Divorce paper

15.Audrey (Paice) Joseph - Marriage Register

16.Sarah (West) Campbell - Death Notice 1910 NAAIRS

Pamela, the thon starts at 18:00 hours tonight, European Central Time and South African time. These profiles will not be counted as being sourced. Also, please take care in how you source.

If your remove -

<references /> you actually de-validate profiles. Because no references will show.

You also need to add full citations and add your name as well.

Brenda, I restored every single bio (except for the one with privacy settings on red - strictly private which would indicate them to be still alive today).

Please do not edit South African profiles earlier than 1807, because they all belong to a project and you are not project qualified.

A well sourced profile would look like this: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Jo%C3%B9bert-1082 (though this falls into our project and although you been pre-1700 certified, you have no experience in sourcing pre-1800 profiles properly; I do not want you to work them - start with the more direct [nearest to you] profile in your family line).
Philip, the sources Brenda is using are just fine. Even though they aren't formatted ideally, they still give a link to the source which is acceptable. Keep contributing, Brenda. Thank you!

I already reset the bio's Abby hours ago (when I was still under the impression that the marathon had not started). Also, if there are no names and meta data to documents they do not count as valid documents. If they are not correctly cited and appropriated - they are invalid. When her adding information to http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Horn-2880 destroys the already existing sources, it is invalidating not contributing.

Thank you Brenda !

The thon starts tonight at 18:00 if you are in the Netherlands or in South Africa Petrus.
Ek beskou alle ''goed'' gesourcede profiles as mooi meegeneem.
The source a thon started 8 hours ago, Philip, so I think all these should count just fine.
I'm sorry Abby, the time machine of Bea showed if the marathon started in New York at 12 noon, it would start here in the Netherlands at 18:00 (as well as in South Africa).
Your image attached to http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pretorius-3026 is a nineteenth century copy of something, not even the baptism. You haven't cited Family Search as you should have. But I'll do it for you, then it can count as a done properly sourced profile.

* http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pretorius-3026 validated with transcription of baptism (eGGSA) and properly cited.

* http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Pretorius-4245 validated with original fully cited baptism image from Family Search, showing the LNAB has to be corrected into '''Pretoriús''' and the first names to be '''Johannes Lodewijk Wijnand'''. Made that into the primary picture instead of the nineteenth century copy.

I think I counted 9, Petrus, ended at Swart-1373. Would you mind numbering your contributions? Thanks!
Thank you so much Petrus !
Thank you Philip ! :)

Hi Pamela, it helps when you post the full url as in http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Olivier-2837

Also, merely supplying the source does not validate anything. For example: http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Janse_van_Rensburg-892 - the source is not linked to the fact of the full date of death (data fields) nor place of death (data fields).

The uploading and naming of documents to support the facts (seeing is believing) helps a lot more to give full validation to records. Citing the sources correctly is very important. We all know that the graves can be found at eGGSA, but the source is not cited in the way it should (see the eGGSA website). These sources that you have found only indicate towards the facts, they do not validate them.

I'll leave it over to WikITree to judge if these profiles can be regarded as sourced and validated (in my humble opinion they are not).
sorry there, Phillip. Will try better
Pamela,

We're more concerned with sources, not full validation according to the Cape project's exceptional standards. So many profiles have no sources that any good one is an improvement. Don't forget to also remove the {{Unsourced}} template. You're doing great!
I do not share the view that the Dutch Cape Colony has exceptional standards. Either sources validate, or they don't.
Thanks Abby, found my confidence a little shaken there and quit for a short while but you got me back on track :). I had a fantastic weekend, thanks Phillip for inviting me to join your team
What time does the source-a-thon end?

Hi everyone, just hopping by to say you're doing soo wonderful, last thing I heard in this hangout was that Team South Africa had now sourced a total of 114 Unsourced profiles, and maybe not all cited correctly, but we at least have sources for them now we can cite in the correct way later if that's needed of course.

Most important thing and goal of the Source-a-Thon is not only to get the Unsourced sourced, but it's also a great way to have some fun together, get to know eachother a bit better and as a team try to get a whole lot of the now totally Unsourced South Africa ones sourced eeh ;)

So thank you all for the great help it's really soo much appreciated, the Source-a-Thon ends in abt 21 hours so still a whole lot of time left :D

We were kicking off  Saturday, October 1, 2016 at 4:00:00 AM UTC, and will go on until 11:59 PM Monday night, Eastern Daylight Time.

So just keep those sourced profiles coming and have some fun and here's a link to the price drawings for those of you that are interested, and check the hangouts once in a while, it's great to watch and see them all live :)

Thanks Bea. Though I do not feel the same way.

What time is 11:59 PM Monday night, Eastern Daylight Time  in the Netherlands Bea?

I know Philip and I think we all (everyone who knows how much you care about the project and getting things properly cited and validated for sure do) understand it must be very hard for you to let things go, but with events like this there's just no way to keep grip on things or ways to control what's happening, you only would get exhausted,  so just try to relax and enjoy a bit how everyone is trying his or her own very best.

We all love you and you're a great coordinator/leader who cares deeply about the project and all profiles in it, for now just try to have a little bit of faith and trust it all will turn out fine in the end...we know it was a huge step for you to start this, so we really all thank you for it !

11:59 PM Mondaynight EDT, in the Netherlands is 05:59 uur mondaynight (when it's actually tuesday 4 October of course), so for us this is tonight or tomorrow morning if you like, one minute for 6 u (so very early in the morning) .. it's quite confusing eeh all these different timezones

And here's the link to the Hangout schedule that might help figure out how much time is left (the schedule makes it much more visible)

Thanks Bea for the kind words. This is why I was under the impression that the thon still had to start when it had already started 6hs earlier. We do not use am/pm but 13:00 for example, and I based our time on the time in New York while it is actually US east coast time ... I had asked this same question before the start and was given a link to a time machine that obviously did not work for me.

The thing is I have already let go (not being perfectionist here, just doing what WikiTree always self aspires to and preach - correctness of citation etc.). Sources say nothing, it is how they relate to the facts and how that relationship is narrated in the bio's and through the fashion in which the sources are cited. And how the documents attached are named.

Great job that everyone is so enthusiastically "sourcing" away. I know I'm the party-p....er here, but who is going to clean and correctly edit all those incorrectly and poorly sourced profiles afterwards? Not me, I already have my hands full with keeping the thousands of profiles within our project in relatively workable (malleable [editing]) state, so that the process of validation can continue. So I do not apologize for having another view on validity than many leaders and contributors.

So I'm singing off from this thon now. Going to take your advice and get relaxed (I was exhausted from other issues in my life at this moment - all this happening was just the cherry on the cake even though WikiTree is my biggest passion and have a lot over for it).

Thanks for you always being so kind and understanding Bea. You are truly a phenomenal person.
No thanks Philip, I know how patient, kind and wonderful you are when you're guiding and helping our members, you probably helped thousands of people by now, so it's not so hard to say something positive here ;)

I also know your view of course and I respect it, but like I said, with events this big, every help is appreciated and I'm sure in the end it will all turn out great, members get more experienced (just like we all did) and if they have learned how things can be done differently (citing sources, validating profiles) or better, they all, (just like us), probably will return to their earlier sourced profiles and make them look better themselves.

I'm still improving and have to still improve a lot of my own profiles from when I started, when I look or come across some of those I'm like: ''Woow this can't be true, was that really me, what on earth was I doing ??"

And we of course also say a source is better than no source, so let's just be happy we now have thousands of profiles with a or maybe even more than one source, that before had not even one  ;)

So just get some rest and  should I add an update every once in a while or are you willing to keep them all updated about the results of your wonderful team ?

I think there now are 152 profiles sourced by the team (I lose track of the numbers a bit, but I think it's correct ;) ) Thank you all for adding sources to all the previous Unsourced ones !
Thanks Pamela !

Here's the latest update of our team , thanks everyone and still a few hours to go, so lets get some Unsourced sourced while we can eeh :)

And still counting down, but here you can all watch the hangout (in about 50 minutes, where all results will be mentioned . Thousands of unsourced profiles now have sources, it's really amazing to hear how much we all can achieve in just a few days ! And great to be a part of this !

Hi Fiona, you'll have to follow the G2G yourself (meaning that notifications are not send out to individual members, but rather in general fashion as this one was). I for one do not participate anymore in Source-thons, for personal reasons and also because I source daily. Anyhow, this G2G-feed is now closed.
