John Walker Was my Great Grandfather. He came from Glasgow. He married Rachel Ardley and Matilda Jane Walker . one of the many children, was my Grandmother . Oral history is that J.W. was 1/8 negro. The family lived in Ballarat where J.W. was a carrier.   Leona Cairns /Howlett

This was apparently a very sensitive issue in our family as this info is comparatively recent. Matilda married a Boer War Veteran and the family lived in South Africa until 1928. Then the family, including my mother, returned to Melbourne. LC

Hi Leona, Thanks for your contribution and feedback . I will continue to look for links between our   groups , however as you  know , there are a large numbers of Walkers who came as free settlers and encouraged to do so to build the colony with their trade and skills.

Kind regards,   Bruce Donaldson
