Join Team Virginia for the Spring Clean-a-Thon! [closed]

You know it's Spring in Virginia when the daffodils, dogwoods, and redbuds are in bloom.

Virginia_Spring_Cleaners.jpg

Looking for a laid-back team to join? You've found it! It's laid back because I'm currently the leader and have two strikes against me: (1) I won't be available most of the weekend and (2) I am not an experienced Data Doctor.

But I would like to see us get rid of all the "USA too early" errors for Virginia profiles, replacing USA with "Virginia Colony" for dates before 25 June 1788.

Want to help?

  1. Have you signed up & gotten your badge? (sign up by posting an answer [here] - currently the first page of the third posting since the original G2G post; let me know if you don't get a badge within a couple of hours)
  2. Post another answer to this question - that will sign you up as one of the 20 "Virginia Spring Cleaners" (teams are limited to 20 members
  3. Add your name to the list of members on the team page - [Virginia Spring Cleaners].

If you have suggestions on how to divide the labor so that we don't duplicate efforts, please post on the page for the [Virginia Spring Cleaners] (db_errors are updated every Monday, so the error will still be listed even if corrected through most of the Clean-a-Thon).

Thanks!

P.S. Aleš answered how to prevent duplication of efforts: Be sure to use the Status button!

Are you interested only in 6x3 errors in Virginia or all Virginia errors? I am preparing customized lists for all teams, so let me know.

You should use the Status button before correcting an error, and after it to set it as corrected, so others coming across the error will know.
My intention was just the 6x3 ones. Can I get back to you once there are some team members who might know more about db_errors than I do?
I made you the table for all errors in Virginia. If you want, I can sitll exclude other errors.
Thanks Aleš! That was totally overwhelming. I reinstated the table with just the three errors, but that wasn't restricted to Virginia. For the Source-a-Thon, we had members interested in West Virginia and Kentucky too, so if we do for the Clean-a-Thon also, they'll be able to find those states in the first table. I hid the table with ALL the errors, but copied out the 600 errors as a separate table and posted it also (in case the team gets bored with just "USA too early" errors).

Cheers, Liz

If you are going after 600 errors only, I will prepare you the list just for that. I can also make it for West Virginia and Kentucky (600 only). It is easyer to work on list of one country only.

No need, but thanks for the offer. Cheers, Liz
I am asking exactly, because i will update the table each monday until CAT
hmm. OK. Exactly. I intend to use two tables. One with no restrictions for just the 603, 633, 663 dbes. The other restricted to Virginia location (600) dbes. Thanks!
What is the question to answer?

Hi Leslie! You found the right question, but you clicked on a reply or comment link instead of the "answer" link (there's only one "answer" link on the page, thankfully). Search Ctrl + f for edit & you'll see where I updated the main question, then you'll see the answer link below (by a line or two or 6) and to the right of my note about the edit.

I am helping out a little bit.  I just adopted an orphaned profile on the Virginia list for the clean-a-thon.  I'm fairly new and want to start slow.

I am working on adding my Isle of Wight, Brunswick and Princess Anne County ancestors to Wikitree.  If you put me on a team, I want to be on a "Southside" team.

Thank you all!

I would like to help with "Jamestown," area of Virginia_Spring_Cleaners.

Please add me to a team and give me instructions as to what you need me to do to help. :)
by Lorraine Kish G2G1 (1.9k points)

Woo-hoo! Welcome! https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Virginia_Spring_Cleaners has details. You might want to get some practice in working on errors to your own tree (see the link and other info on the [Virginia Spring Cleaners page]). See more about the
"C-a-T" on the main [Spring Clean-a-Thon page].

I was so excited to sign Virginia's  first team member, I didn't check first that you had answered the main G2G post for the Spring Clean-a-Thon. You're not registered until you do that. See [this G2G question] & post an answer to it. Note in your post that you're Team Virginia.

Cheers, Liz

And Thanks!

2 of 2 is now closed also.

Please see 3 of 3 - https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/375002/will-you-register-for-the-spring-clean-a-thon-3-of-3 - and post an answer so you'll be registered for the Spring Clean-a-Thon - you can't be a member of any team if you're not registered.

Cheers, Liz

I am really not sure if I am responding to this correctly or not.  But here goes...
Liz,

I hope I followed all the many steps to register now with Team Virginia!    Lorraine

Just realized that I hadn't posted an answer. Contributions during the Source-a-Thon were tracked on the answers posted on the Team pages - so here's mine for Team Virginia.

Liz -  Please add me to Team Virginia.  I'll also sneak into WV.  I'm not available the entire weekend but will maximize the time I have.  :). Thanks!
by Sandy Patak G2G6 Pilot (231k points)
I registered on the main Spring Clean Up Page but darn if I can find it now. I added my name to the Team Virginia page but did not have the link page to my main registration.
Thanks Sandy! I'll track it down. And WELCOME :D

I'd like to join.

However, given that Wikitree suggests Virginia, British Colonial America I'd like to see us use that instead of Virginia Colony for consistency with that new feature.
by William Foster G2G6 Pilot (121k points)
Hi William - Welcome to Team Virginia!

In all the many heated discussions, about the only consistency is that "British Colonial America" is wrong. Please see the guidance in place for Team Virginia for the Clean-a-Thon: https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/379598/question-answers-discussion-virginia-cleaners-clean-a-thon

I posted to your profile page the link for the G2G discussion for official policy (unfortunately, we could not reach consensus on that in time for the Clean-a-Thon).

Cheers, Liz

P.S. Next time you get the dropdown list, read the orange note that pops up. The list, from FamilySearch, is a convenience but not necessarily what WikiTree recommends.
I'll go with whatever is decided, but I want the suggested naming to match the style guide as I've been updating profiles to that given that was the suggestion.

For the Clean-a-Thon, what was decided is posted already:

https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/379598/question-answers-discussion-virginia-cleaners-clean-a-thon

For the future, discussion continues (see the [Policy Discussion].

The dropdown suggestions (including "British Colonial America") are from a FamilySearch database and in the case of Virginia are NOT in accordance with WikiTree style guidelines. As noted in the G2G policy discussion:  ". . . it's what the person themselves would have used at the time of the event. But in most cases that's unknowable, so we shouldn't obsess too much."

ps - I needed to post here to address this, but PLEASE - discuss policy in the [policy post] only. Thanks!

I'm interested in helping Team Virginia with spring clean-up. Many of my ancestors arrived in Virginia, starting in the early 17th century. My mother's  people still live in Buckingham County.
by LM Gragg G2G1 (1.2k points)
Welcome aboard! Thanks for joining us.

Cheers, Liz

P.S. Check out WikiTree's location category for [Buckingham County]. To add a profile to that category, add the following at the top of the profile's page:

[[Category: Buckingham County, Virginia]]

Cheers,
Liz

I'm signed up on the general spring clean, and would like to participate with the Virginia Spring Cleaners.  I'm about as late as can be, I suppose, but glad to help in any way.  Do you have room for one more?  Thanks!
by Stephen Herring G2G1 (1.1k points)

I've put you on the members list for [Virginia Spring Cleaners]. I'd given Team Wiki a heads up before midnight that I had extended an invitation to you & was holding a space in case you said yes, so we should be good.

Thanks for joining Team Virginia!

Cheers, Liz
