It is disputed whether the wife of Henry Howland Jr, Mary, was Mary Newland.  Are we accepting that her maiden name was Newland?

"The Great Migration Begins" by Robert Anderson p1018 (publication date 1995) said that the last name if Henry Howland's wife is unknown and that the maiden name of "Newland" is "unsubstantiated". The citation for this is NGSQ 75:216.

Given what Becky found, it looks like all the dupes of his wife should be merged into UNKNOWN-24524 unless a lowers--numbered Unknown is identified.  Have all the dupe Henry Howlands been merged?
(Unless something more recent than 1995 has been found...)

I found one more possible match for Howland-77: Howland-573.

Thanks for the merge request.
This is still a mess, isn't it. Lots of merges. Did you tease apart the two different couples problem? I requested of Paul that the two outstanding profiles (for merging) be opened since their PMs are inactive.

And then the children.... yikes.
I have the WikiTree directory entries for the Henry Howland profiles I put out merge proposals for.  They all had enough to relate them to this Henry. Two had different origns, however.  I could not find out anything further by using google.

 Howland-325    Henry Howland 1605 Scrooby, Essex, Eng - January 17, 1671
Howland-872     Henry Howland II or Jr. 1604 Fen Stanton, Essex, Eng. - January 17, 1671 ~ Managed by Douglas or Doug Harding.

There are two children on the merged profile that could have belonged to a different Howland family (Not the same names as Henry's known children).

I found the NGSQ article. (online membership of $65.00 per year required.)  Not particulary helpful on Henry. Gives similar information on his children as GMB and follows them for a couple of generations. Gives his wife as "Mary [-----]".

TAG 14:214-215 Discusses the apprenticship documents of the Howland Brothers in England.  Gives the father as Henry Howland of Fen Stanton. (online at Americanancestors.org, another premium web site).

I have access to the NGSQ archives, so I went looking for 75:216 (June 1987) referenced elsewhere in this thread. It's from an article that beings on page 105; the page 216 referenced above is actually part II of the article:

Robert S. Wakefield & Robert M. Sherman, "Henry Howland of Duxbury, Massachusetts, 1633, His Children and His Grandchildren" starting on p 105. I'll summarize key points here.

Three Howland brothers settled in Plymouth early:

1. John Howland arr on the Mayflower 1620

2. Arthur Howland who was in Duxbury as early as 1640

3. Henry Howland, born before 1613, son of Henry, probably born in Fenstanton, Huntingdon, England. "There is questioned the surname Newland, attributed to Henry's wife, Mary, for which no contemporary evidence could be found." The earliest Plymouth Colony record is a tax list dated 26 Mar 1633 at which point he must have been at least 21, leading to the "before 1613" birth. He remoe to Duxbury by 5 Jan 1635/6 where he is a constable. He was NOT a participant in the cattle distribution in 1627 or 1638. Around 1656 he and his family became permanently involved with the Quakers, as did his brother Arthur. Various family members were penalized for this. In 1659, he and William Newland were sentenced to be disfranchesed of their freedome... for being abettors and entertainers of Quakers. He had more such penalties over the next several years, but was sureyor of highways in 1668. His will is dated 28 Nov 1670, probated 8 March 1670/1, inventoried 14 Jan 1670/1. Mentions son Joseph, son Zoeth, dau Sarah, son John, dau Elizabeth, son Samuel, dau Mary, dau Abigail, wife Mary.

Will of Mary dated 8 May 1674: dau Abigail Young, sons Zoeth and John; dau Mary Cudworth, son Samuel, dau Sarah Denis and Elizabeth Allin, son Joseph Howland.
