When I have been involved in merges of particularly numerous, and sometimes erroneous children, I have marked the lowest profile number with an *, any erroneous children not yet removed with a -, and children where there is a question with a ?  I find that it helps keeps things straight while the merges and removals are happening.   After I have finished all the merging and removing, I go back and delete the symbols.

A lot of people seem to use it in their personal GEDCOM files to indicate a direct ancestor. It's not something that needs to be used on WikiTree.

i.e., so remove it when you see it.

When I encounter an *, if I have edit capability, it will magically disappear.
