Looking for family members for my tree

Question

I want to learn as much as possible about my family tree since there are questions as to my family origins (currently thought to be irish, german, russian, english and american indian) as well as to learn about any health issues since i was recently diagnosed with MS (and even more recently discovered a paternal uncle had it as well). I think knowing these things are very important. I know that on my fathers mothers side we are the Helzer's but not much more than that and communication with that side of the family has sadley broken down since my diagnosis. I also no nothing about my mother's father and my grandmother is unwilling to divulge that information other than his last name was Crowe. I do remember from a grade school history froject being distantly related to President John Quincy Adams. Any help would be great! Also my paternal Grandfather George Washington Carter was in te navy during WWII. And my paternal Uncle Lynn Allen Carter was in Vietnam (not sure which branch or rank)

The first step would be to compare the family tree you have with the rest of wikitree, using the find then merges link at the top right of most pages, 

With a small tree it is unlikly to help much but you never know. Next is to start searching the net for family members, if nothing else try the search engine of your choice with the name of someone in your tree and genealogy, best to try it with geneology as well in case some body else can not spell. You could also try specific sites like family search to give you clues. Do not believe everyting you see until you get to see an official document supporting the claim, but it will give you clues to follow.
