Genesis GEDmatch

Hi there everyone

I know GEDmatch isn't WikiTree, but there are so many knowledgeable people here that i thought i'd ask....

Do I understand correctly that new uploads to GEDmatch are going to the new Genesis site, and there is no way to compare a recent upload  with the old data (where my GEDmatch kit is sitting)?

I've been waiting to see a green kit within my relatively close matches, since a new-found AncestryDNA cousin recently uploaded to GEDmatch at my request, but nothing has appeared.  Is this why?

Should i upload my raw data again to the Genesis site?  or hang tight?

Should i stop asking new AncestryDNA cousins to go GEDmatch till the two sites are combined (since i can't tell the new cousins anything anyway...)?

In case it helps, my kit is A388858 but the new Genesis site hasn't got it, it appears.

I'm having trouble logging in to the old site.  Is there a trick to that?  I have Tier 1 tools till the end of the month, and was looking forward to using them this weekend in combination with the new Wiki hyperlinks....

Best regards

This was news to me but a quick search gave this:

During this initial deployment, the GEDmatch Genesis database will be separate from the main GEDmatch database, and comparisons for one will not show entries made in the other. Eventually, the 2 databases will be merged, and results will include entries from both. Likewise, the benefits of the Genesis comparison algorithm will eventually become available to all GEDmatch users.

What this means in practice I have no clue.

I thought Genesis was in beta mode at the moment and is optional. I would suggest trying a normal upload first, then an extra upload to Genesis if you are interested.
Thank you!

Hello Shirlea,

Your AncestryDNA results have been correctly uploaded to the regular GEDmatch. I just did a successful One-to-many search using your GEDmatch ID.

From https://www.gedmatch.com/gedwiki/index.php?title=FAQs#What_is_Genesis_Beta.3F and https://www.gedmatch.com/gedwiki/index.php?title=Genesis_Beta I get the impression that it should be possible to upload data from most companies (e.g, 23andMe, Ancestry, and FTDNA) to both regular Gedmatch and Gedmatch Genesis. This would be two separate uploads.

Yep. Right now GEDmatch and GEDmatch Genesis are distinct, are accessed by two different URL addresses, require two separate raw data uploads, different ID numbers are assigned for each, and kit numbers from one can't be compared against kits from the other. We can use the same login credentials (email and password) for both, but they're operating entirely separately for now.

Something I sincerely hope is that GEDmatch Genesis will also eventually be modified to include yDNA and mtDNA, both current STR and HVR1/2 testing as well as full sequences. The genealogy community is very much in need of updated and managed replacements for Ysearch and MitoSearch, and at the moment I think GEDmatch might be our best bet.

It takes YDNA date but I cannot figure out how to convert from FASTA to VCF for the MtDNA test

I haven't used or even looked at it, but here's something Andrew Page at Sanger put together a few years ago; I think it's still supported: https://github.com/sanger-pathogens/snp-sites. Here's the readme page https://github.com/sanger-pathogens/snp-sites/blob/master/README.md.

May not be an option unless you're familiar with Linux, or can setup a Linux virtual machine on your computer. No help on the FTDNA forum? I haven't checked there.

Since this thread is seven months old, I should probably note that, yes, Genesis did begin accepting yDNA and mtDNA SNP data in, as Lance indicates, VCF format. Sorry, Y-STR testers; still out of luck. Too--somebody correct me if I'm wrong--there are as yet no utilities at Genesis to do searches/comparisons using yDNA or mtDNA SNPs. But it looks like it will get there!

And I vote Lance "Most Likely to be Full-Genome Tested Soon."  :-)
