Who Did John "Isaac" Bates Marry and Did He Have a Middle Name?

There is serious question about the parentage of Elizabeth, the wife of John Bates (b. ENG 1598, d, VA 1667).  I can find no documentation that her last name was Winston, as is commonly held.  This may be an error caused by the assumption that William Winston, who was a witness on John's will, was a relative of John's wife.  Is there any credible evidence that elkizabeth was a Winston?

Also, John was the son of Isaac, but he is often shown as "John Isaac Bates."  is there any evidence that he had or used the middle name "Isaac"?

No documentation that he had a middle name.

I have been wrestling for some time with all the James and John Bateses in my Ancestry. The only documentation which suggests his wife MAY have been Elizabeth Winston is that her (brother?), William, witnessed John's will.

(This John was my 9th Great Grand.)

It would be good if we could confirm or deny this oft repeated bit of information.

John's Ancestry goes back through the Bates of Lydd and, if correct. goes back to a BATE FNU -1299 who married Nellie H.

I would like to see the experts tackle this. Any takers?

Note: Dec 11, 2014. It has been determined that Bates-40 is NOT the son of John Bates and Mary Martine. See the revised Biography. It is a whole new ballgame.
