Hi! I guess you're here because you're interested in joining the Magna Carta project. If you have your pre-1700 badge and are ready to roll up your sleeves - read on!

Or, maybe you're here because you have discovered that WikiTree thinks you're related to a Magna Carta Surety Baron (MCSB).

If you're related to one, you're probably related to a bunch (they all knew each other). If you haven't checked, go to [Relationship Finder] and click "Relationship Finder Quick Links" to see a list of the MCSBs. To interpret the results (e.g., unknown, confident, and uncertain relationships), check out [this G2G post].

You can certainly work on the trail of profiles that WikiTree shows as being between you and the MCSB without joining the project (if you hit a profile that is already badged, please contact the project before editing).

What is "badged"? Short answer: The profile has

Magna Carta Team Base Camp

in a project box that was applied by the project. We have three different project boxes - one for Surety Barons (they all have theirs), one for Gateway Ancestors (only those in a completed/reviewed/project-approved trail have theirs), and one for everyone in between (again, only those in a completed/reviewed/project-approved trail between a Gateway and an MCSB should have one). The Magna Carta Project profiles on the [Examples page] are [William Ironmonger] (a Gateway Ancestor) and [Sir Gilbert de Clare] (a Magna Carta Surety Baron).

Still reading? You're a good candidate to join the Magna Carta project :D  Our goals are

  1. to have a reviewed/approved trail from every Gateway Ancestor to a Magna Carta Surety Baron.
  2. to have a reviewed/approved trail from all 17 Magna Carta Surety Barons with descendants who immigrated to America.

I think we may have achieved the second goal already (but the links are useful). We'd love your help on the first one if you'd like to join.

Go check us out at [Magna Carta Project] (specifically, [this section]) & [Base Camp], then come back and post a "Yes" answer to this G2G question if it looks like the Magna Carta Project is right for you. We'll get you set up with a badge and a welcome :D

Cheers, Liz

Liz,

I did read through the material, even the suggested base camp, am glad I was right on a few relatives though. I am still very interested in participating, as I did show up as descended from many of them as my 25-23rd Great Grandfathers, and I have researched a few of them, just their outlines to find out information on each, not all though. Much research posted to my scratch pad, some has gone poofers off of it though(cough, cough), and still more on pc notepad, google books, and personal books, kindle books, and various other sites. It is my wish to put it to some use, instead of sitting there, like it has been, plus it would ascertain if any of the research I have done thus far, is correct and fair for all.
Welcome Carolyn!
I would like to join please.

I would like to join! I have been working to prove lineage via a possible gateway ancestor (Tyrell Dalton) on my maternal side and in the process discovered on my paternal side William d'Aubigny is my 24th gr grandfather!

Thomas Gerard appears to be the gateway ancestor. So I'm excited to learn more. (I've been wanting to work on getting the pre-1500 badge, so this seems like a great place to start!)

Hi Sylvia! Sorry to take so long in responding. Welcome to the project!

I would like to join the Magna Carta Project and discover more about the connections to the multiple Magna Carta surety Barons which I have recently discovered are related to me.  These Include Richard More, Sr., my 8th cousin 10x removed (Thomas Clarell is my 17th great grandfather).

William (Albini) d'Aubigny is my 4th cousin 23 times removed, Hugh III (Bigod) le Bigod  is my 24th great grandfather, . Henry (Bohun) de Bohun is my 23rd great grandfather, and there are other connections as well.

Hi Jathan! I've added you to the project. You might want to check out [this G2G post] to see which of the trails between you and a surety baron might be the best one to work on (see [Base Camp] for more info about trails).

To see if an ancestor is a Gateway Ancestor as defined by the project (documented by Douglas Richardson), see the list of Colonial Ancestors in his Magna Carta Ancestry series (Google Books has it in [snippit view]).

Cheers, Liz

As far as I can tell all Magna Carts Surety Barons are my great grandparents related in my tree both paternal and maternal are descendants. Sir Gilbert De Clare being closer on the paternal side at 26th generation. https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Relationship&action=calculate&person1_name=Clare-673&person2_name=Davison-2809
I had a question why Elizabeth de Bohun doesn't have a category for Magna Carta as a descendant of Humphry de Bohun the Magna Carta Surety Baron?  Isn't she a direct descendant?  I see she does for Clare, Lacy, and Quincy.   https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Bohun-15
the trail to Bohun has not been developed/reviewed/approved (hit an unbadged profile right away - her father's)
p.s. it looks like Elizabeth's profile could use a re-review to clean up the added references in the source list.
Ma'am,

I would like to join the Magna Carta Project. Like you stated before "If you're related to one, you're probably related to a bunch". I have found multiple direct ancestral relationships with Surety Barons who are 24,25,26 great grand fathers. I would like to help out others so that can also link their past.

Welcome Gordon! I've got you set up.Could you send a request to join the Google Group? (at https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/wikitreemagnacarta)

Cheers, Liz

I would love to join this project. 7 of the Magna Carta Sureties (Saer de Quincy, Robert de Vere, Robert de Ros, John de Lacy, William de Huntingfield, Gilbert de Clare and William Marshal) are my great grandfathers, and all the rest are cousins of varying degrees. I don't yet have pre-1500 permission, but I'm working on that! :) I LOVE WikiTree. I've never had such satisfaction in Ancestry, which pales in comparison. The collaboration here is fantastic. Just two days ago I saw that one of my ancestors, Richard Chamberlayne, b.aft. 1436, has been allotted a Magna Carta badge. Chuffed to bits.

Hi Frances! This is an older "join us post", but... Welcome! I'll ask David to contact you. In the meantime, take a look at the Magna Carta Project Members page, which talks about current requirements for badged members and Affiliate membership.

Cheers, Liz

Liz....

I think this may be more than I can handle.  I do not want to mess anything up.......You are all doing such terrific work and I would love to be a part of it, if I were 20 to 30 years younger.  At my age it is too complicated.

It's a bit complex, but it's a team effort. Perhaps you'll give us another look after you've gotten more comfortable with WikiTree in general. I found the learning curve to be really steep, but the more you do, the easier it gets (until you totally run out of time!).

I would be interested. According to the current info in the relationship finder William d'Aubigny (Albini-39) is my 25th great grandfather, as you mentioned that pretty means I'm related to all of them. ;) I've intended to go through my line to link up and flesh out profiles on that line anyway, so this gives me the push to work on that particular line. However, I'm afraid I won't be available to do much on that particular line until next month, as my work schedule is insanity for the remainder of this month.

check out https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/428144/ about how to assess the trail WikiTree returns for you.

I look forward to hearing back from you next month!

Cheers, Liz
Thanks! ;)
It shows you got great character to help with all that going on!!
Thanks Troy! That's very kind of you!
Hey Liz! Troy's message reminded me to follow-up with you. I've been over here quietly working backwards to flesh out and connect. I'm working from most recent descendants to make all the of connections. It's quite a task connecting them all, as there are some VERY common surnames (Smith, Parsons, Hamilton) and all of the families intermarried and lived roughly in the same region.
Hi again NJ! Does this mean you're ready for a Magna Carta badge? Have you hit your Gateway yet?

Cheers, Liz
Hi Liz! I'm ready! It looks like the line has changed since I first posted. As of my original post William d'Aubigny (Albini-39) was showing as my 25th great grandfather. He is now showing as my 1st cousin, 25x removed through the relationship finder, which I am assuming is due to the additional research through the Magna Carta project. My personal research so far from present day backwards has gone up to my 4th great grandmother Lydia Sturgill Parsons (Sturgill-148). I do intend to continue pushing back through the generations and continuing to research and update. I'm not sure if that all makes sense ;) If it doesn't let me know.

Thanks!
woo-hoo! Welcome NJ!

PS to NJ - WikiTree's relationship finder shows you as a cousin of Albini-39, but a lineal descendant of Saher de Quincy (Quincy-226) & much of that trail shows Confident (see https://www.wikitree.com/g2g/428144/ on how to assess a trail). Unfortunately, it does not appear that the gateway ancestor in that trail - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hawkins-350 - is one of those whom Richardson documented. This would make him a "Questionable Gateway Ancestor" & that's an area I don't work on... and I'm not sure either of the other project Leaders do either. You might want to check out info on the Questionable category page & post to G2G if you can't find a connection through one of the documented Gateways (listed in Category:Gateway Ancestors).

I would like to join the project.  Just found my last proofs to gateway ancestor Roger Ludlow and get all of my line posted...with proofs!

Thanks

Hi Ken!

Congratulations! and Welcome :D

It looks like Vic started working on the trail for https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Ludlow-37 but base camp still shows that its development is underway. You might want to touch base with Vic & take over working on it. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Magna_Carta_Team_Base_Camp

When I'm developing a trail, I use the same checklist as Jack created for reviewing a trail - it's an image linked to Base Camp: https://www.wikitree.com/photo/png/Magna_Carta_Team_Base_Camp-3

Yes.

I am not in the USA and do not have any gateway ancestor but am familiar with the Magna Carta, Declaration of Arbroath and the people who signed these documents

I would be interested. I checked the relationship finder and I am directly related to about 15 of them, and indirectly related to the rest.

Hi! I think you're the "youngest" member to ask to join - in the same month you joined WikiTree! Give a holler if you have any questions (in G2G or to me or at base camp... or also in our Google Group once you're signed up for it*).

Looks like we're cousins through George Neville, so in addition to EuroAristo naming standards, you'll want to check out Welsh guidelines. I work with the Cymru Project too, so I can help if you have questions. See https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:European_Aristocrats#Naming_Standards and https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:Cymru_Welsh_Royals_and_Aristocrats_742-1535

Cheers, Liz
