Is anyone interested in a WALKER name study?

I have wanted to ask this for quite awhile but the project category and page are being used to track one person's DNA kit. I'm not sure how to deal with that issue. I thought the first step was to see if it would helpful to have a Name Study for WALKER. There are many lines in many countries. Sorting them by location may help knock down brick walls.

The categories should be set up in the standard way, for example, see Flaugher Name Study. This example categorizes by location. With as many Walkers in many countries we may want to consider additional category structure.

The current category and page, hopefully can be set up as a sub-project.

I want to organize those listed in  Walkers of the Old Plymouth colony which currently have WikiTree profiles (help would be appreciated). This would be a sub-project listed on the project page. Anyone wanting other lines/ancestors listed by location would have another sub-project.

Are you interested. If so, do you have any suggestions.

Don't be overwhelmed. I am not an expert either. We have the support of WikiTree, many help pages and G2G to get us to where we need to be. I will need a DNA expert to handle that area. I'm just a beginner with categories and know enough about free-space pages to know to keep the names short and keep punctuation to a minimum using only what is required. It makes things easier long-term.

Pat

Steps to be taken:

Study project/categorization data on Wiki-Tree:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Help:Starting_a_Project

Since we do not have enough interest for a project we can begin to set up our pages as if they were project and sub-project pages.

Set up basic Category Structure: WIll anything other than "By Name Study" or "By Location" be helpful?

Restructure (if not possible, make acceptable alternative) data currently included on category/project pages as a sub-category/project.

Add to project category/project pages data that relates to ALL sub-projects and links to all sub-projects with names of originator/managers.

Current sub-projects to be added:

Walkers of the Old Plymouth colony Pat Credit, Originator/Manager

Sub- project name: Lynden Rodriguez, Originator/Manager

Sub- project name: Pam Bourke-Shaw, Originator/Manager

Sub-project managers should maintain their links on the project page and any sub-project categories for project approved category structures (or seek assistance, in needed/desired).

I would prefer that the privacy setting for project and sub-project pages was set to public and all sub-project originators/managers were on the trusted list of the project. One or more project managers should be on the trusted list for ALL sub-projects.

SORRY, I HAVEN'T BEEN KEEPING UP WITH THIS DISCUSSION - BEEN HAVING MIGRAINES.

Much better now.

I'm, sorry. I'm only a new wiki member. How do I add me Walker's to this category?.
Once I work out how I'll add the few I have entered in. Ive stiil have a ton of walker data to add which hopefully I can get around to doing it this weekend

John , don't be sorry! Helping each other is what g2g is all about!

I just added the category to Thomas Walker. Now you can cut and paste it to other profiles. IF you use to the edit tab of the profile then the category is added just above the biography.

Added: For more information there are a couple of help pages:

Help:Categorization

Help:Category_FAQ

Thankyou heaps everyone. I'm still entering huge amounts of data. Ive sourced using registration indexes. I do have all their GRO birth indexes written down that I'm going to throw in at a latter date. My grandfather I found out had 3 Uncles that served in World War 1. 2 of them fell in different parts of France and the 3rd made it back. Very interesting. I'll Finnish up in the next couple days with what I have and will start adding them to the name study.
Another quick question, do we add people to this study that married a Walker? Or just those born a Walker?
Also created [[Category: Australia, Walker Name Study]]
It would seem to me that if the Walkers are categorized for the name study, it would be redundant to also categorize the spouses.   You wouldn't learn  anything additional about the Walkers from the spouses, and the Walkers themselves are already categorized.  It would be extra work and extra clutter on each profile, that would not add any value.
John, hold off putting any more profiles in that new category. The categorization structure is not correct.
Ok. All my Australian Walkers are NSW.
I set up categories for all six states of Australia.

Here's the link to use for those in New South Wales:

[[Category: New South Wales, Walker Name Study]]
I think this is a great idea! How the hell do I join?

Me too - it will be an enormous task, given the huge spread of the name all over the world.

I am interested in the Irish side of the name (that born in the Seagoe, Armagh area.

Good luck with this quest.

Pam, Thank you for your response. Glad to have you on board.
I am also from the Walker lines in Northern Ireland.  They came to (now( Canada in 1815ish.
Hi Anne. Just wondering what area of Canada your Irish Walkers came to? My Walker ancestors came to Cape Breton in the early 1800's.

I'm in. Walkers in Colonial Virginia is one of my huge tangles that I've been working on off and on for a while now.

I'm for sure descended from Nancy (Walker) Maclin (born 1775; m 1796, Brunswick County, VA). She was definitely the daughter of David Walker, but which David & which Walker line is the question (he's currently connected to George Walker as best guess for his father).

The Walkers are my mom's side, and she never did a DNA test. I did though. GEDmatch #T227726

I posted to the Walker Name Study page. I think that what will work is to have the existing Space:Walker Name Study page be the "parent" for subprojects (such as a Walkers of Colonial Virginia; Walker DNA, Lancaster, Scotland; and ... Walkers of Plymouth?)

I'll post something on the related G2G question, but it may take awhile to get everything sorted.

Cheers, Liz

P.S. I'm posting mostly as a Walker descendant, but I'm also a WikiTree volunteer Leader & help out with the One Name Study project (categorization).

Liz, Glad to have an expert on board. So then you can fix the current categorization structure! I would like to learn how that's done and would like to try helping.

I found my Fuller-Walker link from the source,  Walkers of the Old Plymouth colony, and would like to help others make their connection. My goal was to have profiles for all the WALKERs from that source. I would like to add categories for any WALKER with unknown descendants and maybe call it "Brickwall Finder"

I also thought about tracking the migration across the country by having categories

Migration toward .... using their last known residence. the migration toward  OR

Residences during 1600s, 1700s ...

I would put a note on category page that there should be more details on each profile.

The purpose being if someone has a WALKER brickwall, The have last known location/time period then they could see if they could line up to the categorized WALKERs. Hopefully, the other sub-projects would use these categories also.

What additions, if any, would you make to the standard, "By Name Study" or "By Location"?

Hi! I did century categories for the Peyton Name Study - see for example https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:16th_Century%2C_Peyton_Name_Study

For standard ONS categorization, it's

Parent: Category:Walker Name Study
1st level sub:
Category: United States, Walker Name Study
Category: England, Walker Name Study
Category: Scotland, Walker Names Study

For style of 2nd level subcategories, look at categories under

Category: United States, Name Studies

Category: England, Name Studies

Category: Scotland, Name Studies

The USA Walkers & Tennessee Walkers are misnamed. I want to work with Steven before labelling them as such (once so named, the EditBot moves in and the category disappears before you might be ready for it to go).

I created Category:Virginia, Walker Name Study & its parent United States, Walker Name Study.

See more on ONS categorization on the ONS project page:

I'm interested in the study but like others don't know how I can help out.  My Walker line is my great grandfather Thomas Walker who arrived in Australia somehow in the mid 1800s and was born in Falmouth Cornwall, the son of a Scottish Master Mariner who worked the English Channel intercepting pirates and smugglers.  I know his life in Australia but not back in England/Scotland.

Sorry, for not answering sooner. I wasn't feeling well then and I just noticed this post today. I set up categories for all six states of Australia.

These categories are in use:

[[Category: England, Walker Name Study]]

For those interested participating in Walker Name Study:

If your Walker ancestor has a profile on WIkiTree, you can add a categories to the top of the profile above the Biography:

One for the century and at least one for the location (birth, death, marriage, residence). Categories are set up as needed using the hierarchy that is detailed on the Category: Flaugher Name Study page.

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Category:Flaugher_Name_Study

If you want/need assistance, I will try to help best I can, but remember I am new to this also. There are help pages for just about everything or a G2G post can help us through this.

I have three Walker Name Study categories set up on my 4GGF,William Walker. Currently one is red because I haven't set it up yet, but I will soon. The other two are links to the category page that this profile will be listed on.

I also have a template for the Walker Name Study on his daughter, Elizabeth (Walker) Fuller: She is the reason I started this post.

If you want to do a more detailed study you can set up your own sub-project by setting up a free-space profile. There are a few that can be used for an example in the Walker Name Study. This has just been set up by Liz Shifflett for

Walkers of New York

Keep it simple. It would be a great place to keep links for your Walker resources or general Walker information, setting goals and maintaining a task list..

Have had my first "interest" in [[Category:New York, Walker Name Study]] shown.  I've added this category to both their profiles.  Lots of info on Ira H. Walker.

So, we're in business!

Cheers,  Linda

I am interested. I am not sure where my Walkers are from beyond Mississippi.
by
I set up a category for Missisippi:

[[Category: Mississippi, Walker Name Study]]

You can add this to your profiles above the biography.

I am interested, AND:

1) It might be helpful to create categories for non-UK Walkers by the name and/or year the first Walker of a line settled in another country. eg. Mine in Australia would be myself, Kay Walker- Aus1958. I would also fit the category of my paternal grandfather William Walker-NZ1906 as he settled in New Zealand in 1906 (from UK).

2) I have a tricky family history for my Walker surname. My GG Grandfather George Walker was actually born George Harvey but changed his name for business reasons (not criminal!). This was only discovered through a note in the UK BDM Register at the GRO alongside the registration of one of his sons as a Walker. Two sons were registered as Harveys but later married and regstered their own children as Walkers. The daughters were registered as Walkers from the start.

I love doing genealogy research so I would be happy to be part of a project.

Kay,

I would suggest trying to use the standard categories, I am not a expert in categorization and my attempt to add different categories to my subproject has hindered my progress:

Walker Name Study has subcategories for both country and century. This is the standard for Project: One Name Studies.

English Immigrants to New Zealand was set up by Project: New Zealand

Category: English Immigrants to Australia might work for you.

The story of your 2GGF changing from Harvey to Walker would make an interesting free-space page that could be a companion page to sub-projects for both the Walker Name Study and Harvey Name Study.

If any of these options don't fit your needs, you can get assistance from the projects mentioned above.

Let me know if I can help,

Thanks, for reminding me of the mess I have on my sub-project page. I need to make some time to completely rethink my focus.

Not sure how to use the site.  But I do have names to add to the study.  Ruby Mae Walker, Emma Jackson Walker, Samuel Walker.
