Adding an official LNAB to der Franken profiles

Yesterday, I adopted a couple of Der Franken profiles, and when I understand the name rules right, I must edit their LNAB to Franken, so that they can be listed with the other Franken's, and receive more matches too.

Is this right? I'm asking, because Franken is not a recognized name in the euroaristo project yet, but we do have loads of profiles with that name.

I just noticed that some profiles like http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Franks-74 can be merged into Merovingian ones, but I see no such opportunity for rules from the pre Merovingian era, like http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Franks-574.

For those early ones, sources like wikipedia don't provide house names to use as official LNAB's, so to me it looks like Franks or Franken as an LNAB is the last resort.

Merovingian and Carolingian will frequently be the correct LNABs for these profiles. Can you give an example of a pre-Merovingian one for us to look at?

Because there are still people who like to believe in them, and there's no dispositive evidence that they didn't exist.
Awesome.  I'm off to create a profile for Santa Claus.

Are you absolutely sure this person doesn't already have a profile on WikiTree? As an example, all the mythical figures of European lore are already here. I, for one, am descended from Easter H. Bunny and Nicholas "Santa Claus" of Myra, LNAB "Northpole."

ugh..
I am currently researching the line of S. A. Squatch, but I have a problem.  He is very popular here in the Northwest.  Lot's of people have seen him, heard him, or have seen evidence that he has been around.  There is even a cast footprint made from one he left in the mud (after a good Northwest rain), and a picture (with a zipper showing on the back of his suit, so he really is a modern creature.)  But, NO ONE has absolute proof that he exists.  It may be that he is a relative of Yeti Unknown, (no LNAB), but we're not sure yet.  Is he fictional, so I shouldn't enter him? Or, it there enough circumstancial evidence that I should start a profile, just because someone is going to do it anyway?
I believe I'm actually a lineal descendant of Squatch. Just be sure you search for duplicates first.
And how am I supposed to find the duplicates of Easter H. Bunny and Ostern Haase?
Our job in EuroAristo is a very, very difficult one.
thanks for the guffaws this evening! haven't laughed this hard on wikitree, well, ever.

You're very welcome, Jillaine! cheeky

I would leave the name as is. If Franken is not a recognized surname in the euroaristo project, then leave it be.  Franken is probably a shortened derivative created by the american immigrants when they arrived in America.

I see what you mean, but this is not related to American immigrants. Der Franken refers to the Franks as a people:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Franks

Charlemagne was a ruler of the Franks (der Franken) and a member of the Carolingian dynasty, which was named after Charles (Karel) Martel. Karolingen means Karel's children.

We have hundreds of Franken profiles here, and about a dozen der Franken, and assigning Franken as a LNAB to those is not much work for me. It will help to find matches, but I also hesitate to use Franken as an official LNAB here. And that's because large portions of those Franken's can probably be reassigned to other houses, like the Merovingian.
Why would Franken or der Franken be used as an LNAB if it's not a surname?
Well, first, it is used in hundreds of medieval profiles here, and assigning the other dozen helps to find duplicates. Second, we have thousands of Holland's here too, which is not an official LNAB either.

In other words, we have a practical situation here, where loads of profiles with an LNAB like Franken or Holland exist, even though these are not official LNAB's. And for me, Holland is a geographic area, just like Hainaut, which is official here.

Anyway, if Franken's can be reassigned to a house like those mentioned on the Franks wiki page, there is no reason to add it as an official LNAB. But until they really are reassigned, those hundreds of medieval Franken profiles are still there.
Enno, thanks for the explanation.

I hope that the help pages concerning name fields will be updated to reflect this practice.
http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Name_Fields#Leave_out_surname_prepositions

http://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Name_Fields_for_European_Aristocrats#Last_Name_at_Birth

The first link applies to all profiles, regardless if they're accepted aristocrats or not, and when applied, it results in LNAB's like Holland, as far as that is a location someone is from or ruler of.

To my regret, this rule does not solve the problem that I started with, because for the people referred to here, I found last names like Francs, Franken, and Franks, so even removing the prepositions does not give me the single LNAB that I hoped to find.

And following up to the comment that I added to the question itself, a Franks like LNAB may only be needed for persons born before 480 or so. Most of the other ones can have an approved LNAB like Merovingian or Carolingian.

As far as I remember, all names you mentioned and their variations have "Franken" as CLN.

For the reasons mentioned by others, the LNAB should be "Franken", IMHO.

Dinasty names shouldn't be applied to the ancestors of the funder.
