Often times the Masonic Temple that the deceased attended will have members attend the burial which fact may be mentioned in the obituary.  Also I have found information in biographies.

I did this and found out that the person was not a mason. I now realize that you can find out quite a lot about a person from their obituary. So I am grateful for this answer
