what's in a middle name?

Last night, I adopted some persons that appear to have codes like A1 as their middle name. See the family referenced here. Anyone like to clean those?

I see that a lot on Ancestry.com as well. Used to track certain male lineage, I guess. It works in Ancestry - ALL CAPS - being likely the least confounding of the options, but it won't work in a shared tree. I am impressed by the seeming complexity of this particular system though.
