Have you uploaded DNA to Gedmatch Genesis? Why you Should

Have you taken a DNA test and uploaded to Gedmatch.com for free?  If yes, THANK YOU!  You have helped potentially thousands of people to easily compare DNA with you.

But have you uploaded to Gedmatch Genesis?  If yes, have you entered the kit# here at WikiTree? I had forgotten and just did it.  Why should it matter?  1) Gedmatch Genesis allows uploads from companies that the regular Gedmatch does not (such as Living DNA and the newer 23andMe tests).  This means more DNA matches for you. 2) And because WikiTree now allows the entering of the Genesis kit#, you have another place for potential matches.

To get to Gedmatch Genesis, log in to your regular Gedmatch account.  Go towards the bottom on the right and look for the Gedmatch Genesis link.  You will have to log in again, but can use the same log-in for the regular Gedmatch.  Once logged in, you have a link on the right to upload your raw DNA. And just like the regular Gedmatch, it takes 24-48 hours before you can fully use the features.

Eventually Gedmatch and Gedmatch Genesis will be merged.  I look forward to that day! But in the meantime, make sure you have uploaded to both and have added both kit numbers to WikiTree.

Thank you so much for your reply to my message.  My searching can wait for using another source like Genesis.  I have a fellow researcher whose kit number is with Genesis and I can't plug him into a one on one search on Gedmatch, as of now.  Maybe this will change in the future.
Thank you again. Anita
Emma, I don't understand how all this works.  I have done Ancestry DNA and FTDNA mt and Family Finder. I have a GED match number.  I just joined Genesis also, but it apparently uses the same number as my GEDmatch.  I don't see a place on Wikitree to add a number for Genesis.

I ran a Lazarus report for my grandmother but don't know what to do with it.  I also tried to do a triangulation between me and another person who shares DNA, but again - what in the world do I do with the list of kits and names it generated???

I am so lost!!!!
Carolyn, a Genesis ID is just another kind of GEDmatch ID, so when you're on your 'DNA Tests' page editing a particular test, enter your Genesis ID where it asks for a GEDmatch ID.  If you have already entered your GEDmatch ID there, you don't really need to add a Genesis ID.  One ID is enough for others to attempt comparisons with your kit.  However, having a GEDmatch Genesis ID listed does help those who only have the Genesis ID.

Lazarus usage has a learning curve, plus typically you would only obtain a Lazarus kit when you already have a specific goal in mind.  It's much more useful when you have something in mind you want to do with it.

It sounds like your fully diving into the DNA pool, but perhaps into deeper water than you're ready for?!?  Keep asking questions!  You'll get there!
Thanks for the encouragement, Rob.  I don't know if this DNA stuff will ever sink into my aging brain.

Carolyn,

As Edison mentioned, Genesis is now merging with regular Gedmatch, so you won't need to worry about having both kit numbers anymore. As to the other features, I learned by just playing around. You can't break the system.  smiley

Nice answer Rob!

Yes, i now have two entries in Genesis,  both for the same test. cheeky  And many of my DNA matches from classic Gedmatch are now showing up in Genesis, too.

One feature I'm missing in the Genesis interface is family tree links. There are no links to Wikitree or to the Gedcoms that folks uploaded to Gedmatch. Do your informants know if those will be added to Genesis, Ed?

Dunno, Ellen; sorry. But I assume (dangerous word; however...) that the merger of the databases will retain the best features of both. In other words, the Genesis comparison algorithm will be applied to the much larger data set in "Origin" (my term, not theirs), and linking features like WIkiTree and GEDCOM will stay.

I don't know exactly what will be done about identical kits that are uploaded to both "Origin" and Genesis. I was an early-adopter too, and like you I have two kit numbers for the same raw data. Dunno if they will attempt to consolidate those kits, or if it will be left up to us to remove one or flag it as "research."

Really looking forward to the completion, though. For one thing, I'm trying to help a cousin now who has six people in her family tested with 23andMe v5, and we just aren't able to swim in that larger 1 million+ pool as yet.

My husband and I both downloaded to Genie is but it still is processing at it has been alm9st 2wks. What did we do wrong? It does say we haven't downloaded our resources??
nd advise me what I have done wrong.
Update: June 1 2019 it will ALL be available on Gedmatch.com -- no more jogging between sites and databases. WOw, more than 1 million. That's super. Your friend must be very very very tired. Grateful for their work.

Emma, thanks for the information.  I had no idea that Gedmatch Genesis would accept tests that are already in the regular Gedmatch database.  I have some relatives who just tested with 23&Me and I didn't think I would be able to look at their results until the long distant future.

I just uploaded my test to Genesis. Now maybe I can find my missing connections.

Emma, thank you for prompting people to upload to GEDmatch Genesis.  Many probably aren't aware of it at all, or don't know that you can and should upload results to both.

I don't understand the reason for this, "Note: If you have only taken one DNA test and have entered a Gedmatch kit# to WikiTree already, you do not need to enter a Genesis kit# as well."

The two systems are not currently compatible, so I would suggest attaching both IDs to your Wikitree profile.  For example, I have a MyHeritage test that I uploaded to both.  I entered the MyHeritage result in Wikitree, including the GEDmatch ID, for that test.  I also attached the GEDmatch Genesis ID as an "other" auDNA test.  That way, people will know that there are results available in either system that they can compare with.

I hadn't thought of this.  Thanks Kerry, I will edit my post.

Thank you Emma. This is great information. I just received my results from LivingDNA and had this very question. Thank you for clarifying. I will follow up on this. I just now completed and uploaded at GEDMatch and added new GEDmatch ID to WikiTree.

I just got my results from them today as well. Upload to Genesis took no time at all.
Easy peasy on GEDmatch, but thank you for spelling it out. I was wondering about this and never knew about the link on GEDmatch and how to go about uploading my raw DNA from LivingDNA.

A person needs to test at Family Tree DNA to have their DNA stored for future testing.  If for instance you test your father at AncestryDNA and want to later run a Y chromosome test on him (after he has passed away) then you are out of luck.

Does the Guinness Book of World Records keep track of these things?

I had to go back and look at all of the tests at FTDNA ordered against a 2004 sample. Sixteen separate tests. Sixteen.

This sample at FTDNA won't hold up for a NextGen yDNA test or greater, but still. Pretty impressive demonstrated longevity.  :-)

So do you mean that I can upload a 23andme-test that was done in November 2017?

A follow up question on that -- when you did health data aswell as family data, is the data for health analysis always part of what goes into gedmatch?
by Maria Lundholm G2G6 Pilot (226k points)
Yes, you can upload your 23andMe test to Gedmatch Genesis and then enter the information (test and Genesis kit number) to WikiTree.

Any health information you may have received from 23andMe does NOT transfer over to Gedmatch.  Only the chromosome information.  When comparing with another person, it will show which chromosome(s) you share with that person and where on the chromosome(s) you share.
Thanks for the quick reply Emma!

In my second question about health info, I was also thinking, as I don't really understand this, that the DNA data I import to Gedmatch/Genesis can be used to get health analysis from, because you cannot split up your DNA kit to export family-data-only? Uh, I find this difficult to explain...

Can someone with the right tools extract the health info similar to what I got from 23&me from my data on Gedmatch?
The quick answer is no.  No one, but Gedmatch has access to the DNA "code" that is uploaded which is a series of letters in certain patterns that represents your DNA makeup. Gedmatch "translates" that code into only what other members can see (the chromosome comparison).

Other members cannot see this raw code. They cannot see what is on each chromosome--only if they match you on each chromosome.

And even if others could get this code, they would have to have the sophisticated software necessary to translate the code into health information. It is a very complicated process.
An additional note: There is no split when uploading to Gedmatch because the same raw code that is used to tell you health information is used to compare chromosomes with others. However, it is how the company uses the DNA code (whether they have the necessary software--which Gedmatch does not) that determines what you see from it.
Thanks a lot Emma! :)
After doing the upload I have one more question (at the moment ;) )

how do I add my wikitree-id to Genesis?
Maria, unfortunately, you can't.  Genesis currently doesn't show GEDCOM links or Wikitree links.  With legacy GEDmatch, when you add your GEDmatch ID to your WT profile, it automatically gets added to your GEDmatch matches.
Thanks for your reply Kerry!
Just a note on how complicated it is to get health information from DNA test data.  I believe that this falls into two categories.   First, there is information based on a company's own database, such as whether your test correlates with other users who drink a lot of coffee.  This is not available to anyone else.  On the other hand, many of the SNPs checked by places like 23andMe are chosen specifically because their tie to disease is known based on published research.  That almost always is supported by data uploaded to public databases.  If I have your downloaded test results, I can look for matches between your SNPs and known disease risk factors.  Those databases aren't easy to use, but they are probably no harder than the source and DNA work users do on Wikitree every day.

Is there a WikiTree profile with two Genesis IDs of matching relatives where WikiTree's "Compare" feature works?  I have not been able to find one.

Thanks and sincerely, Peter
by Peter Roberts G2G6 Pilot (705k points)
The compare feature does not currently work for the Genesis IDs.  I do not know if there is a plan to make it work for them either.
Thanks Emma,

Is that at GEDmatch issue or a WikiTree one?

Sincerely, Peter
Since they are working together on what features they will bring to us here, I would say both?

I finally uploaded my LivingDNA data on to Genesis yesterday and now I am getting one to one matches. Thank goodness, I was beginning to think I was unique on GEDmatch.

Is it possible to change the original topic somehow to highlight that this information is now a little misleading as time has moved on.

Not everyone will read the date of the post and already people are adding to the older topic, but may also be encouraged to duplicate a kit already in GEDMatch on Genesis

You can now only upload to GedMatch Genesis but shouldn't do that if you had already uploaded to Gedmatch before November ?26th? 2018 but now can do so for newer 23andme kits eg which could not be successfully loaded to the GEDmatch

All existing kits were transferred from GEDMatch to Genesis, with the same numbers, and there are far too many duplicates already.

Anyone who has uploaded to both before that date will have created a duplicate set of matches that will be mostly identical, but the upload may not be fully identical as the load system differs.

Eg if you look at the DNA Diagnostic tool for both a Gedmatch and a Genesis load of the same Ancestry kit you will see different numbers of usable SNPs down the bottom.

One should be either deleted or marked as Research only under the kit edit feature so that the duplicate matches don't flood the system for everyone. The difference being that Research only kits are still fully visible to the uploader but not to the rest of the community, one effect being that you can reassure yourself that the differences are indeed minor.

If you simply upload the same kit twice in Genesis it looks like they mark it as such and ask you to delete one of them

I recently had occasion to use the new Beta mode Genesis model.  The not says they have completed migrating all data to this side.  But are still having a few issues.

One of the new features of the People Who Match 1 or 2 kits report is that you can select triangulation and not be in tier one.

The One to Many Report does not have the X Chromosome feature the Original one did and I do miss that.

But I would say you should try it and see how it works for you.
by Laura Bozzay G2G6 Pilot (833k points)
They updated that report and triangulation is no longer an option.  Sigh...
