My interest in L226 Brian Boru DNA stems from the marriage of our son into an O'Brien family. Family genealogist Maureen O'Brien traces their heritage back to Michael O'Brien, who was born in Doneraile in 1815. Doneraile is in County Cork, just south of the border with County Limerick. The Y-chromosome DNA of ...

This haplogroup originated in the counties of Clare, Tipperary and Limerick several hundred years before the time of King Brian Boru who lived, 941 - 1014. Several distinctive markers indicate the probability of a person being part of this haplogroup, but the presence of SNP L226 is final confirmation. Who Can Join?

Apr 11, 2014 - There are a lot of events going on in Ireland at present to commemorate the Battle of Clontarf. Brian Boru died on the 23 of April 1014. He was the son of Cinneide Mac Lorcan and some people believe that JFK was a descendant of Brian.

Brian would almost be a good candidate for a Quick Link.  Check your descent:

https://www.wikitree.com/index.php?title=Special:Relationship&action=calculate&person2_name=Cennetig-1&gen=30

But 30 generations might not be enough.

Brian is here, disguised as a Kennedy

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cennetig-1

though that's not the reason to think JFK might be a descendant.  His traceable lines, if any, seem more likely to be through the Fitzgeralds.

Brian's descendancy tree here:

http://www.genealogics.org/descendtext.php?personID=I00117046&tree=LEO&display=block&generations=10

The most common line of descent is the one at the bottom, through Isabel de Clare, Countess of Pembroke, cradle-snatched wife of William Marshal and daughter of Strongbow, by his Irish wife.

Descendants include Robert the Bruce, George Washington according to WikiTree, George Bush, and "almost everyone in Ireland, and much of the West" according to this

Descents from Isabel de Clare (30 generations usually enough):

William Marshal was over 20 years older than Isabel de Clare, but most historians believe that he had a lot of respect for her, and most likely love,, he took her on a honeymoon, I  have heard that this was the first recorded honeymoon in England, although she was a good 20 + years younger, she only survived him by 12 months, a common occurance with close couples.

On another note Conor O'brien, chief of the O'brien clan is the the 32nd direct male descendant from Brian Boru.

None of which is relevant to the Y chromosome stuff.  To get anything out of that, they have to make 3 very doubtful assumptions

(1) Number of descendants is related to status.  So how come Howland has a lot more than Bradford?

(2) You can use haplotype frequency as a proxy for number of descendants.  This might be true on average, but it doesn't work for individuals.  Many people with a lot of descendants have no extant male lines at all.

(3) Surnames say something about male-line descent over a period when they weren't hereditary.
