Proposal: Occupation Sticker

I would like to propose a new sticker for Occupations.

Theoretically, this type of sticker could be used on thousands of profiles, but my primary usage would be to highlight important or interesting occupations (such as those occupations or trades that were passed from generation to generation).

As an example, John Harris Sr. is noted as being "reared to the trade of a brewer, that followed by his father." While the information on John's father is not available (or documented yet), it may come to pass that trade was passed through multiple generations and may prove as an interesting note on the profile.

In a study (*see reference below) it was determined that:

Of the total number of men whose current occupations were classified as farmers and farm managers, no less than 85 percent had fathers who were farmers. About 41 percent of the men whose fathers were professional, technical, and kindred workers were engaged in the same occupational group.

* Blau, Peter M., Otis Dudley Duncan, David L. Featherman, and Robert M. Hauser. OCCUPATIONAL CHANGES IN A GENERATION, 1962 AND 1973 [Computer file]. Madison, WI: University of Wisconsin [producer], 1983. Ann Arbor, MI: Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research [distributor], 1994.

Before any specific wording or template is recommended, I wanted to get some feedback from others as to whether or not this may be something other would be interested in.

I support the creation of an Occupation sticker similar to the Religion sticker that Liz mentions below.

I wonder if any of my ancestors had interesting or unusual occupations!

I love stickers. More stickers! I'm all for this.

And, speaking as a person who deals in categories, please, if you do this, incorporate instructions on how to use the sticker on a profile. Explain the elements, if there are any, especially the ones involving categories.

Many users seem not to realize that any red category created by a sticker needs to be addressed in the sticker template! It won't show at the top of the page in edit mode.

Thank you Natalie.

While I cannot create a Sticker myself, I would be more than willing to help draft the instructions on the use.
I like the idea!

I recalled seeing such a template before... Yup, found it:

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Template:Religion

I think that you could probably work on revising Template:Religion (which has text saying it's for any occupation).

Cheers, Liz

P.S. I added the tag "templates" to the question.
Just realized I didn't say that I would use such a sticker on profiles that I manage - I would!
Well, isn't that the darndest place to stick it (pun intended). No wonder I don't see it in use very much, it is hidden off in a unrelated template that you wouldn't think to look under...

But I do have to say, wouldn't this better classified as a "General Template"? That way it could be use for a multitude of stickers that do not yet exist.
Totally agree - should be Template: [something general, like Occupation] & then folks can tweak it to their use (like the stickers for Descendant & Recognition).

Cheers, Liz
Now I am conflicted with the post - and if we should try to reorganize (and rename) the Template:Religion, or move forward with a new template for occupations.
Steve - Whatever you move forward with, I'd use an Occupation sticker :D
Natalie - Love the Blacksmithing sticker!
Natalie, the sticker looks great!
Thanks!! I looked through lots of clip art and thought that one was best.
I'm making more and they'll be stored here:

There were variations or subdivisions of "farmer" that could add interest.  For instance, in colonial Maryland the landholders were "planters", who generally not only worked the land themselves but had assistants, whether employees or indentured servants -- or enslaved persons -- to share in the work.

In medieval Europe you had peasants or serfs, who did not own the land, but you could actually say that the land owned them, because they were bound to it.

Do you think a sticker of this nature would be useful; however it was used?

Not a fan of stickers personally but each to his own. Am irritated by people who spend their time adding national stickers to profiles they don't manage and a Yorkshire sticker has turned up as well. For me they just move profiles to the bottom of my list of profiles to go back and look at. (When I first joined I read the item on cousin bait because my tech genius granddaughter told me it was next to impossible for mere mortals to get their work found on Google).

More like millions of profiles when you get into things like farming.  Not entirely sure which sticker you are wanting to create, a specific sticker for farmers or a general ''occupation'' sticker?

For farmers, I would definitely not bother, a farmer in most eras did way more than just farming.
