You approved the merger of Denne to Denne, now you are saying that we can not merge because of the Pre-1500 rule.  I don't understand how you can deny me then approve me.

Douglas, you're pretty new to WikiTree. WT differs from most other genealogy sites in its twin goals of creating one single family tree with millions of branches, and in creating accurate, well-sourced genealogies. When you get to ancestors who lived pre-1500, the sources available are fewer and fewer, and likely more suspect. It is more difficult to separate the reliable sources from the unreliable ones, and way more time consuming. In order to work on those profiles, one needs to demonstrate that they have experience in handling these more difficult cases, and have shown the ability to NOT jump to a conclusion without supporting evidence. This requirement helps advance our goal of practicing accurate genealogy, and setting WikiTree apart from other sites which contain thousands of unquestioned and erroneous ancestor connections.

I've been here in WT for nearly two years, and am only pre-1700 certified, and, I do not yet feel qualified for pre-1500 files. I haven't found ancestors of mine earlier than the early 1600s. If I do, I might feel inclined to pursue pre-1500 qualification.
Jim,

I am new to Wikitree, but not new to genealogy.  I have been at this since 1984 and have traveled to every state and gone through a multitude of genealogical records, mostly down South.  I switech to Wikitree because Ancestry is no longer reliable and can not be used as a source when requesting information from the SAR, Society of the War of 1812 or any other such organization.

Man - I wish I had that experience. I'm finding that armchair genealogy is fine, but there's some incredible findings you can make if you go to the original sources and pull them out of the county courthouses, cemetery offices, and church offices. Just never can seem to find the time. Maybe when I retire one day... one day...

Hi Douglas,

After you've done the pre-1700 self-certification quiz and gained some experience providing sources and editing early profiles on WikiTree you can request pre-1500 certification.

Merging

Anyone can propose a merge of duplicate profiles. You also don't need Pre-1500 Certification to approve a merge. The standard rules on approvals apply.

However, you need the certification to complete a merge if either person is born before 1500. Before working on these merges, see the help page on project protecting and merging.

Also I will note that the suggestion by wikitree did not initiate the merge it just suggested for further research.

Hope this helps and best of luck

There are pre-1500 arborists who are qualified to complete the merge and usually do it fairly quicky if the question has the "pre-1500" tag attached.

Finding the right tone to put a question may also actually help to get a satisfactory answer sooner.

Hi Douglas,

If you would like to add me to the trusted list, I can help complete the merge. I've looked over the two profiles and it's pretty clear they're the exact same person. I'll send you a trusted list request and we can get this taken care of. - Thanks!

The merge was recommended by another person on Wikitree.  I've looked at the profiles, and they are definitely duplicates.  I am wondering why you created the duplicate profile when there was one already here, and that one would have come up as a 'close match' when you went to create it.  I just tested that theory, and both of these profiles came up as possible duplicates. . .

I see you also created a duplicate profile for his wife.  I have suggested a merge of those two profiles.

Also, you need to provide a better source than "Denne Family Genealogy" as a source.  A pre-1500 profile needs a reliable source.  If you have a copy of a genealogy that has this person in it, you need to indicate where the person that put together the genealogy obtained the information.

Since you aren't pre-1500 certified, you need to approve the merge.  The other PM also needs to approve it.  Then one of us that is pre-1500 certified can complete it.

Thanks for understanding and working with others to fix the issues and merge the duplicate profiles.

A quick search for a source to use as a reference for these profiles turned up this book, although the author didn't indicate his source for the information, so you would still need to find a better source.  But it's a starting place:  Gookin, Frederick William. Daniel Gookin, 1612-1687: assistant and major general of the Massachusetts Bay Colony : his life and letters and some account of his ancestry. Chicago: Priv. print., 1912.

Another source is: John Burke, A genealogical and heraldic history of the commoners of Great Britain and Ireland enjoying territorial possessions or high official rank; but uninvested with heritable honours (London: n.pub., 1834-1838).  Burke is known/proven to have incorrect data in it, so we don't recommend using it.  Again, it gives you something to work with . . .

I have added those sources to the biography of the profile into which the one you created needs to be merged.

Actually you cannot edit the profile due to the removal of your Pre-1700 certification.

This may be a "source", but it does not list original sources.
